PROVO, Utah – BYU quarterback Zach Wilson didn’t come out of the locker room for postgame interviews following the Cougars loss to Utah on August 29.

The sophomore QB wasn’t available for comment after leaving the field following BYU’s 30-12 loss to the Utes.

Wilson was requested for an interview by the media following the defeat.

“Of all of the turnovers Zach Wilson had last night, that was the biggest one,” said former Utah QB and co-host of KSL’s Unrivaled, Scott Mitchell during the program’s 2-minute drill segment.

The rivalry game loss was the worst performance of Wilson’s 10 game career. Wilson’s stats for the 2019 rivalry weren’t anything to write home about as he went 21/33 for 208 yards. He averaged 6.3 yards per completion but threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns.

Wilson’s two interceptions were returned for touchdowns by Utah’s Francis Bernard and Julian Blackmon. Utah scored 20 points during the game off of BYU turnovers.

Following the 18 point loss, Wilson though requested for an interview by the media, didn’t appear in front of a microphone or make any postgame remarks.

“Under no circumstances do you bypass that,” Mitchell continued. “It’s part of the responsibility and if you’re a leader of a team you show up in the most difficult of circumstances.”

“You can show up to that press conference and not even mean it and go, this one’s on me. I’m gonna take this. I’m gonna own it,” said fellow co-host Alex Kirry.

Wilson first interception came early in the game with the game tied 3-3. Former Cougar and current Utes LB Francis Bernard jumped a Wilson pass and took it to the endzone for a score with 10:17 in the second quarter to give Utah a 9-3 lead. The Utes wouldn’t look back.

The sophomore QB threw his second pick-six of the game with just over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter when his second cousin Utah DB Julian Blackmon took the ball 39 yards for six points to break open the game for the Utes 30-6.

“You can really become a leader. You can really embrace a program if you will be that person in the worst of circumstances. Your true character shows up in those difficult times,” said Mitchell, “This kid’s under a tremendous amount of pressure. He is the face of BYU’s program right now.”
