BYU’s Win At Tennessee Was Historic Crowd Size For Cougar Football Game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – It’s not every day the BYU football program plays games in venues that hold a capacity of over 100,000 fans. That was the case on Saturday as BYU defeated Tennessee in historic Neyland Stadium.
The crowd wasn’t a sellout. Neyland Stadium’s capacity is 102,455. But the final attendance number to witness BYU’s historic double-overtime win was one of the biggest to ever witness a Cougar football game.

Saturday night’s attendance to witness BYU vs. Tennessee was 92,475 making it the fifth-largest crowd to ever witness a Cougar football game.
The five largest crowds ever for BYU football games are as follows.
- Michigan 2015: 108,940
- Texas 2011: 100,995
- Penn State 1991: 96,304
- Texas 2014: 93,463
- Tennessee 2019: 92,475
Four of those five games have taken place during the era of BYU’s football independence (since 2011). With BYU’s win against Tennessee, the Cougars have now won two of the games in front of the five largest crowds.
The other win was against Texas in 2014.
BYU’s home stadium in Provo, Utah is LaVell Edwards Stadium and it holds up to 63,470 people when sold out on a given game day.
BYU’s football program has played in many of the biggest stadiums college football has to offer over the years. Of the 25 largest stadiums in college football for the 2019 season, BYU has played in 14 of them in past seasons.
