PROVO, Utah – The late great BYU offensive lineman Nick Eyre has been named to the 2022 College Football Hall Of Fame ballot.

Eyre, who passed away in November 2018 at the age of 59, was BYU football’s first Consensus All-American in 1980.
A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Eyre joined the BYU program in 1976 and began playing in 1977 as a redshirt freshman. Eyre, more commonly known by his teammates as “The Bear” for his gentle giant nature, played through the 1980 season protecting, the blindside for quarterback greats Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, and Jim McMahon.
BYU was 41-8 during Eyre’s career with the Cougars. The beginning of what would be a golden era of BYU football.
2022 College Football of Fame ballot
Eyre is one of 78 FBS players to be on the 2022 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. A ballot that has some of the biggest names college football has ever produced.
Some of the notables include USC legend Reggie Bush, Stanford QB Andrew Luck, Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington, and Alabama’s Shaun Alexander.
BYU inductees in Hall of Fame
BYU currently has seven inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame. Eyre, if inducted, would become the eighth.
The seven individuals tied to BYU in the Hall of Fame include legendary head coach LaVell Edwards, quarterbacks Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Gifford Nielsen, Marc Wilson, and tight end Gordon Hudson.
Inductees to the College Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2022 will be announced this January leading up to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
