Mac McClung Commits To Texas Tech Over BYU, Others

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Mac McClung has spoken and he’s made his decision. The high-flying 6-foot-2 guard from Georgetown announced on Wednesday that he will be signing with Texas Tech over BYU, Auburn, and others.

Losing out on McClung is a loss for BYU. The combo guard was one of BYU’s top targets out of the transfer portal as the Cougars look to add another player in the backcourt.
McClung will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. According to ESPN, McClung plans to submit a waiver request that could potentially make him eligible this season.
If granted a waiver, McClung appears to be Tech’s starting point guard now that the Red Raiders previous starter Davide Moretti announced he would be playing pro ball in his home country of Italy next season.
This was the second high-profile recruiting battle that has involved BYU and Texas Tech for heralded transfer. BYU beat out Chris Beard’s Red Raiders in April for the commitment of Purdue grad transfer Matt Haarms. Haarms will play immediately this season in BYU’s frontcourt.
Last season, McClung led Georgetown in scoring with 15.7 points per game and two years ago was one of the top freshmen in the Big East Conference.
BYU moves on without Mac McClung
BYU will now turn their attention in the transfer portal to East Tennessee State guard Daivien Williamson. A 6-foot-2 guard who started in 14 games for the Buccaneers this past season, Williamson has the Cougars in his top five.
Like McClung, Williamson is an undergrad transfer and has two years of eligibility remaining. Other schools include Wake Forest, Tulsa, San Diego State, and Georgetown.

Backcourt players on BYU’s roster right now include senior Alex Barcello, junior Connor Harding, sophomore Trevin Knell, Gonzaga transfer Jesse Wade, and SLCC transfer Spencer Johnson.
Barcello will be one of the senior leaders for BYU in the 2020-21 season both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Depending on what happens in the transfer market, BYU could give Connor Harding time at point guard where he competed last season during the early portion of training camp.
