PROVO, Utah  – BYU quarterback Zach Wilson had a surgical procedure on his injured right hand on Tuesday. A spokesperson from BYU said the football program anticipates he will be able to return to play this season.

Sources tell KSL Sports that Wilson will miss at least the next three games on the Cougars 2019 schedule and is targeting a return for the Liberty game on Saturday, November 9th in Provo.

The surgery Wilson had performed on Tuesday was on his right thumb according to reports and confirmed by KSL Sports.

Wilson suffered the injury to his thumb when attempting to make a tackle on a Toledo defender after throwing an interception late in the fourth quarter of BYU’s loss against the Rockets this past Saturday.

Through five starts this season, Wilson has thrown for 1,312 passing yards and thrown five touchdown passes to four interceptions.

Wilson took over as BYU’s starting quarterback last season at the midway point in replace of Tanner Mangum. Since taking over, Wilson is 6-6 as a starter for the Cougars.

BYU currently has a 2-3 record. The sophomore quarterback who prepped at Corner Canyon High School will miss the Cougars games against South Florida on October 12th, Boise State on October 19th, and Utah State on November 2nd.

Both Boise State and Utah State are rivalry games for the Cougars. BYU has a 1-5 record against Boise State and Utah State the past three seasons. The Cougars have never faced South Florida on the gridiron.

With Wilson now expected out for the next three games, BYU will turn to redshirt freshman quarterback Jaren Hall as their starting quarterback.

Hall has only thrown seven passes in his BYU career. A native of Spanish Fork, Hall is the first Black-American quarterback to ever play in a game at BYU.

Injuries to BYU quarterbacks are nothing new to the Cougars. Since Max Hall graduated in 2009, the Cougars have only had one season where they had the same starting quarterback throughout an entire season. That was in 2013 with Taysom Hill as the quarterback. BYU posted an 8-5 record that season.
