Semi Taulanga’s viral touchdown a product of embracing Utah’s ‘rhino’ role

SALT LAKE CITY It was one play. One clip. Maybe 10 seconds of football. But just like that, Utah tight end Semi Taulanga caught everyone’s attention.

Over the weekend, the Utah tight end’s viral moment — catching a pass, running through contact, and rumbling roughly 20 yards for a touchdown — took off nationally. The kind of clip that doesn’t just rack up views, but reshapes how people see a player.

For Taulanga, it’s been a different kind of spotlight.

“It feels pretty good, my name’s kinda getting out there,” he shared. “Me being a ‘Rhino’ and loking at the comments, everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, he’s a fullback’ or ‘He’s a tight end.’ It’s cool, I’m glad my name’s getting out there.”

Semi Taulanga’s viral moment — and a versatile identity

The clip itself is pretty straight forward. Taulanga releases late, finds space, secures the ball — and then delivers the moment everyone remembers. A defender steps up, and Taulanga doesn’t try to avoid contact. He goes right through it. Then he keeps going, all the way to the end zone.

That physical, downhill style — part tight end, part fullback, part something Utah has really leaned into — is exactly why the “Rhino” role exists in the offense.

And it’s exactly why the internet ate it up — because nothing plays like a big man touchdown. There’s just something about a 250-plus-pounder —330 pounds in the case of Taulanga– catching, trucking, and finishing a play that cuts through timelines, and Taulanga’s clip hit that sweet spot.

And honestly, the name fits — “Semi” moving like that in space, running through people, it feels less like a nickname and more like a warning label.

Built for the Rhino role

At Mater Dei High School, Taulanga bounced between tight end and defensive tackle early in his career before settling in the trenches. But it was rugby — not football — that sharpened the athletic traits now showing up on tape.

“So I played both ways my freshman year at Mater Dei — tight end and defensive tackle,” Taulanga shared. “After that, I focused more on defensive tackle, but I really developed my athleticism through rugby, that’s what helped me stay light on my feet.”

Though Taulanga was a two-way player early on in his high school career, he was recruited as a defensive tackle. He didn’t even know what the Rhino position was until he arrived at Utah.

“I didn’t know about the Rhino position until I got here,” he said. “I seen Solatoa was playing Rhino, and then they wanted me to play it… I was like, ‘Okay, yeah, let’s do it.’”

Development behind the scenes

The viral moment might be new, but the development isn’t. Taulanga pointed directly to Utah’s coaching staff this spring as a major factor in his growth, particularly tight ends coach Luke Wells and offensive line coach Jordan Gross.

“Oh my gosh, Coach Wells is fantastic,” he said. “Not only Coach Wells — Coach Gross too… all of those guys are helping me develop to where I wanna be.”

Coach Luke Wells described the Rhino role — featuring Taulanga & Sione Motuapuaka — as unique pieces of the offense, who have already exceeded his initial expectations.

“It was surprising to me how athletic they are,” Wells said. “They move better in space than I thought they could early on, we’ve been able to do more with them than I thought we could.”

That tracks with how Utah builds this role. The Rhino position demands a player who can process like an offensive lineman, move like a tight end, and finish like a fullback — often within the same play. Wells pointed to the physical foundation first.

“They’re really good at the point of attack… both of them are strong kids, they bend really well, and have pretty good change of direction,” he said, noting their ability to block at the second level as well.

The Rhino role isn’t window dressing; it’s designed to punish defenders with physicality, but also with unpredictability, and Taulanga fits the bill.

When asked what he wants to be known for offensively, his answer wasn’t about production — it was about his mindset.

“Just putting me anywhere,” he said. “Fullback, tight end, guard, center — wherever you want and I’ll do it.”

The Bottom Line

The viral clip made Semi Taulanga visible. The role he’s carving out could make him important. In a system built on multiplicity and physicality, players like Taulanga are not only necessary, but unique.

The truck stick moment? That’s what people remember. The embracement of a role, the development behind it, and the trust to execute? That’s why it matters.
