Utah football lands third 2026 commitment in quarterback Michael Johnson....

Utah Utes fans fly flags during a game between the University of Utah Utes and the Brigham Young University Cougars held at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024.

SALT LAKE CITY – Kyle Whittingham and his Utah football program landed their second commitment of the 2026 class in Clear Falls (League City, TX) edge Preston Pitts.

Utah welcomed a handful of 2026 prospects to campus for official visits, with Pitts among the group. Along with Pitts, Utah brought in four-star offensive lineman Tommy Tofi, three-star receiver Luc Weaver, and three-star safety Logan Hirou.

Pitts joins Colby Simpson as the first two commits of the 2026 class, and is a nice addition to Lewis Powell’s defensive end room.

Preston Pitts announces commitment to Utah football

Pitts is an emerging talent out of Texas. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder has a promising blend of qualities for the defensive end position. He owns over 11 offers but Utah has been viewed as the favorite.

Utah’s coaching staff identified him early on in the process as a prospect. Their relationship building was key to Pitts decision, which was capped off by a great experience on the visit.

“I feel like I have a great relationship with Coach Scalley, Coach Swan, and the rest of the defensive coaching staff,” Pitts said. “I usually get a FaceTime call at least once a week and they’re constantly checking up on me. Coach Scalley and Swan both got to see me work out in person, which is where it all started,  and so to spend time with them this weekend was awesome.”

On his visit, Pitts was looking to gain a better perspective of what Utah brought to the table as a program. He came away impressed with the culture inside the locker room.

“One thing I was looking forward to with my visit was the culture and the atmosphere within the program,” Pitts said. “I got to see that and really enjoyed being around the team. I got a really good idea of what it’s like to be a student athlete here.”

More important than anything else, Pitts believes Utah can help him achieve his biggest goal of getting to the NFL.

“The biggest thing I was looking for was a coaching staff that, I believe, can and has a track record of developing players,” Pitts said. “Not only that, but also one that’s going to be around while I’m there. The main goal is to make it to the NFL, and I believe Utah is somewhere that I feel I have the best shot to make my dreams a reality.”

How does Preston Pitts fit with Utah football?

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Pitts has an outstanding frame for trench warfare at the college level.  With his frame, he should be able to pack on size fairly easily without impacting his athleticism.

He is committed as a linebacker and shows the ability to play in space, including good ball skills. However, Pitts is at his best when he’s attacking the backfield. He plays in attack mode but does a good job of maintaining a disciplined brand of ball.

Pitts has the sort of motor that defensive coaches covet and is pretty relentless in his pursuit of the ball. He can knife into the backfield, bend around the edge, and work through blocks to get to the ball.

Again, Pitts is committed to Utah as a linebacker, but he looks best as a pass rusher. He gives Utah a good piece to help with depth on the defensive side of the ball.
