Utah commit Noam Yaacov a finalist for BNXT League award

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah basketball didn’t just land an intriguing international prospect in Noam Yaacov. It landed one of the most productive young guards in European basketball.

A couple weeks after committing to the Runnin’ Utes, Yaacov was named a finalist for the BNXT League MVP Award.

Yaacov has proven he can produce, run an offense, and win against professional competition.

That is recognition that underscores exactly why Alex Jensen and his staff made him such a priority this offseason. It further validates the belief that the Runnin’ Utes landed one of the top prospects this cycle.

A pro résumé before college basketball

Yaacov arrives in Salt Lake City with a background unlike almost any guard Utah has added in recent memory.

The Israeli-Danish point guard spent the 2025–26 season with Filou Oostende in the BNXT League, a cross-border professional league featuring top clubs from Belgium and the Netherlands. Before that, he developed through elite European systems with ASVEL, Hapoel Jerusalem, and Hapoel Tel Aviv.

At just 21 years old, he already has:

  • Basketball Champions League experience
  • EuroCup experience
  • Professional playoff basketball experience
  • National team experience with Israel

That’s not normal for an incoming college player. And the production says a lot. During BNXT League play, Yaacov averaged roughly:

  • 17.9 points
  • 5.7 assists
  • 3.9 rebounds

While shooting over 50% from the field and 44% from three. Those numbers helped earn him BNXT Player of the Month honors in March before ultimately being named an MVP finalist.

That’s significant context for Utah’s offseason. This isn’t simply a player with intriguing traits or developmental potential. Yaacov was one of the most productive and impactful guards in an entire professional league.

The offensive engine Utah needed

Each of Utah’s offseason additions all provided clarity — but Yaacov was the centerpiece that made the picture crystal clear.

His role is bigger than scoring. Utah needs him to stabilize the offense, create advantages, and make the right decisions consistently throughout games. That’s what separates true lead guards from simply talented guards.

Yaacov checks every box. His game fits exactly what Alex Jensen appears to want offensively:

  • pick-and-roll creation
  • pace control
  • spacing manipulation
  • quick decision-making

And the reason Utah believes he can handle that responsibility is because he already has. Yaacov has spent years operating within professional systems where pace, spacing, and decision-making are emphasized every possession. That experience doesn’t eliminate the challenges of the Big 12, but it does give Utah a much more proven foundation at the most important position on the floor.

What this says about Utah’s offseason

At this point, Utah’s offseason strategy is pretty obvious — and honestly, it needed to be.

Last year’s roster never fully fit together. There were talented pieces, but not enough connective tissue. Too often, possessions felt improvised instead of organized. That’s clearly what Jensen and the staff set out to fix.

Everything about this portal cycle points toward functionality.

They added experience. They added positional versatility. They added players who understand structure and can operate without needing to dominate the ball. Jackson Holcombe gives them a connector. Taison Chatman gives them spacing. TJ Burch adds defensive edge. Malek Gomma brings physicality. Alec Anigbata adds another frontcourt spacer with professional experience.

But the truth is none of it really mattered without the point guard. That’s why Noam Yaacov is the most important addition of the entire cycle.

The Bottom Line

Utah didn’t just need talent — it needed someone capable of organizing the game. Someone who could control tempo, create advantages, and make the offense function possession to possession. Modern basketball falls apart quickly without that guy, and Utah spent too much of last season trying to manufacture offense instead of naturally flowing into it.

Yaacov changes that — at least on paper.

And being named a BNXT League MVP finalist raises the expectations attached to him whether anyone says it out loud or not. Utah didn’t recruit him to slowly develop into a contributor two years from now. They recruited him to walk in and run the team immediately.

That’s a lot to put on one player. But if you’re Utah, that’s also exactly why you went after him so aggressively in the first place.
