Mountain West Conference Suspends Athletics Citing Coronavirus Concern

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Mountain West Conferences suspended all spring athletic events, citing the current state of concern over the coronavirus.
Utah State University located in Logan, Utah, is in the Mountain West Conference.
The suspension of activities is indefinite, according to the conference.

“The health and well-being of student-athletes, as well as the campus and general communities, is of utmost priority. Therefore, the Board has determined the most prudent course of action is to align with the recommendations of public health care and government officials to help limit the spread of the virus,” read a press release from the Mountain West.
“Those teams that have qualified for an NCAA Championship event may participate at institutional discretion, subject to the status of those events as determined by the NCAA,” the release clarified.
The Mountain West Conference is also leaving decisions about recruiting up to individual institutions.

How Do I Prevent It?
The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
- Avoid touching your face
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDC does not recommend wearing a facemask respirator to protect yourself from coronavirus unless a healthcare professional recommends it.
