ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State Trailblazers couldn’t overcome a early run from Tarleton State, falling to the Texans 77-59 on Friday night at home.

Dixie State was led by Hunter Schofield with 20 points and 11 rebounds, completing the double-double. Dason Youngblood added 10 points in the loss as they were the only two Trailblazers to reach double figures.

Tarleton State’s Konstatin Dotsenko led all scorers with 23 points. Montre Gipson chipped in 16 points in the win.

The game was even through the first five minutes before the Texans went on a 16-0 run. Dixie State went scoreless for over 5 minutes before snapping the skid with two quick buckets. Then they went scoreless for another four minutes and Tarleton State had a 27-14 lead with under 4 minutes left in the first half.

The Texans took a 36-23 lead into the halftime break. DSU’s leading scorer in the first 20 minutes was Frank Staine with 7 points and 4 rebounds. The Trailblazers made just 8 of their 24 field goal attempts for 33 percent and went 2-for-11 from beyond the arc.

Jonathan Jackson led Tarleton State with 9 points, while Konstantin Dotsenko added 8 points. The Texans shot 40 percent in the first half, while going 4-of-8 from the three-point line and nailing all 12 of their free throw attempts.

In the second half, Dixie State trimmed the deficit to 10 early but that was as close as they would get as the Texans extended the lead and kept the Trailblazers at a safe distance.

Tarleton State outscored Dixie State 41-36 in the second half and shot 60 percent from the field. The Trailblazers made just 28 percent of their field goals in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Dixie State dropped their record to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in Western Athletic Conference play. They will play Tarleton State again on Saturday, February 20 at Burns Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST and will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
