Utah Freshman QB Byrd Ficklin Earns A Pair Of Big 12 Weekly Awards

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Utes seem to be in good hands at the quarterback position after true freshman Byrd Ficklin earned two Big 12 weekly awards in his first career start.
The Oklahoma native was named Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week after taking over for injured starter Devon Dampier and leading Utah to a 53-7 victory over the helpless Colorado Buffaloes.

He completed 10-of-22 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns while not committing a turnover. Ficklin added 151 rushing yards, setting an early tone for the evening when he broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

About Byrd Ficklin
The 6’1, 200-pound QB signed with the Utes after leading Muskogee High School to the 2024 Oklahoma state championship game and the program’s first undefeated regular season since 1980.
Ficklin completed 171-of-253 passes for 3,249 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior. He added 947 rushing yards and scored 20 times on the ground. He added another 40 touchdowns as a senior.
He holds Muskogee H.S. records for career passing yards and touchdowns. Ficklin also played basketball and competed in track and field in his prep career.

Ficklin had thrown for 138 yards and run for 111 yards and four total touchdowns before Saturday’s performance while playing in six games behind Dampier.
