Byrd Ficklin Is ‘Here To Stay,’ Devon Dampier’s Return Still Looms Large

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah didn’t just avoid losing a quarterback — it held onto its future. Per his agent, Amber Mathurin, true freshman Byrd Ficklin will return to Utah for the 2026 season, turning down interest from multiple Power Conference programs who saw his combination of arm strength, mobility, and poise as a prime portal target.

As a true freshman, Ficklin didn’t just contribute — he popped. He finished the year with 56 rushing attempts for 503 yards (about 9.0 yards per carry) and 10 rushing touchdowns, showcasing elite explosiveness every time he touched the ball on the ground.

He also proved capable as a passer, completing 21 of 35 throws for 301 yards, 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions, adding a valuable dimension beyond his running threat.

The decision comes as all signs continue to point toward another major domino still falling in Utah’s favor: Dampier is expected to return as well.

If that holds, Utah will enter 2026 with the most stable, talented, and complete quarterback room in the Big 12.

While this is big for next season, this is much more significant for 2027. By locking up Ficklin now, it speaks volumes of him and the confidence Utah has in him to be the successor to Devon Dampier after next season.

With Ficklin committed to year two in the program, combined with the playing experience he gained, Utah would enter 2027 with a ready-made leader instead of an open competition. That kind of continuity is rare these days, especially with quarterbacks.

In a conference where every advantage counts, having a quarterback you trust and have groomed rather than one you hope adapts quickly could be the difference between contending and collapsing.

Return is the word for Byrd Ficklin

A true freshman with Ficklin’s flashes operating behind an entrenched starter usually leaves. Other programs saw the potential and reached out — some offering immediate starting reps, some offering NIL-heavy packages. But Ficklin chose continuity. Chose development. Chose Utah.

According to sources, his decision hinged on three key factors:

  1. Utah’s belief in him — Ficklin knows the staff truly sees him as a long-term QB1 candidate, not a gadget tool or depth body.

  2. The system fit — In Jason Beck’s offense, Ficklin’s strengths translate cleanly: RPO savvy, intermediate accuracy, off-platform ability, and enough athletic juice to stress defenses.

  3. His confidence that waiting his turn isn’t a step backward — The staff told him the truth. The fans have been incredibly supportive of both Ficklin and Dampier.

Ficklin didn’t just buy in — he doubled down. He wants to develop here. Utah gets to keep molding one of its most promising young quarterbacks since Tyler Huntley.

With another year to not only learn and develop, but contribute, it all will set up Ficklin to take control and hit the ground running.

So what about Devon Dampier? Everything still points to a teturn

While Ficklin’s decision is headline-worthy on its own, the reality is Utah still expects Devon Dampier back for 2026.

Nothing has changed there. And with good reason — Dampier has every incentive to return:

  • He’s the face of the program.

  • He’s coming off a historic offensive season.

  • Utah is a Big 12 title contender with veteran pieces returning.

Put simply: the fit is too good, the potential is too great, and the unfinished business too obvious.

If or when Dampier announces his return — and Utah expects he will — the Utes will have something rare in modern college football: A proven star and a developing star in the same room, both fully aligned with the program.

The Bottom Line

In an era where young quarterbacks typically bolt at the first sign of a depth chart squeeze, this is a rarity. And a win — a big one.

In a sport increasingly defined by instability, Utah just secured clarity. Ficklin staying means the future is intact. Dampier likely returning means the present is dangerous.

Most programs either build for tomorrow or lean on today. Utah is lining up to do both. And for a team eyeing a Big 12 championship — and a real push into the CFP conversation — this is the exact kind of quarterback stability that top contenders need.
