Byrd Ficklin Is ‘Here To Stay,’ Devon Dampier’s Return Still Looms Large

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah didn’t just avoid losing a quarterback — it held onto its future. Per his agent, Amber Mathurin, true freshman Byrd Ficklin will return to Utah for the 2026 season, turning down interest from multiple Power Conference programs who saw his combination of arm strength, mobility, and poise as a prime portal target.
As a true freshman, Ficklin didn’t just contribute — he popped. He finished the year with 56 rushing attempts for 503 yards (about 9.0 yards per carry) and 10 rushing touchdowns, showcasing elite explosiveness every time he touched the ball on the ground.
He also proved capable as a passer, completing 21 of 35 throws for 301 yards, 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions, adding a valuable dimension beyond his running threat.

The decision comes as all signs continue to point toward another major domino still falling in Utah’s favor: Dampier is expected to return as well.
If that holds, Utah will enter 2026 with the most stable, talented, and complete quarterback room in the Big 12.
While this is big for next season, this is much more significant for 2027. By locking up Ficklin now, it speaks volumes of him and the confidence Utah has in him to be the successor to Devon Dampier after next season.
With Ficklin committed to year two in the program, combined with the playing experience he gained, Utah would enter 2027 with a ready-made leader instead of an open competition. That kind of continuity is rare these days, especially with quarterbacks.
In a conference where every advantage counts, having a quarterback you trust and have groomed rather than one you hope adapts quickly could be the difference between contending and collapsing.
