SALT LAKE CITY — Utah football has added another in-state piece to its 2027 recruiting class, as Corner Canyon two-way lineman Jackson West has committed to the Utes.

Morgan Scalley and his staff add another local prospect with size, physicality and developmental upside in the trenches. West plays on both sides of the ball at Corner Canyon, but Utah is bringing him in as a defensive lineman.

West’s background as a two-way lineman gives him a strong foundation. He understands leverage. He understands hand placement. He understands how offensive linemen want to win blocks because he has lived on that side of the ball, too. Now, Utah gets a chance to take that skill set and develop him on defense.

Utah adds another local trench piece

For a program that has long been built around line-of-scrimmage play, West fits the profile. Utah’s commitment to recruiting the state continues to show up in the 2027 class.

West gives the Utes another in-state addition, and this one comes from one of the premier high school programs in Utah. Corner Canyon has consistently produced high-level talent, and Utah staying connected to that pipeline is important.

The Utes have always been at their best when they are strong up front. Utah’s defensive identity has been built around physical defensive lines, reliable linebacker play and defensive backs who can tackle and cover. The front matters because it sets the tone for everything behind it.

Why defensive line makes sense

His two-way experience is part of the appeal, but the defensive projection is where the Utes see the upside. Utah has always valued defensive linemen who can play with toughness, understand leverage and grow into their bodies within the program.

He brings a physical style, a trench-player mentality and the kind of developmental profile that Utah has historically been comfortable betting on. The Utes have built defensive fronts through a combination of evaluation, strength development, technique work and patience. West now enters that pipeline.

Depending on how his body develops, West could eventually project as an interior defensive lineman or a bigger defensive end type. Utah will have time to evaluate that once he gets into the program. For now, the important part is that he gives the Utes another young defensive lineman with functional strength, toughness and room to grow.

As a defender, West’s best traits are his physicality and his willingness to play through contact. He has the profile of a player who can become stronger, more technically refined and more disruptive with time in a college strength program.

Utah is not taking West as a finished product. The Utes are taking him because he has the frame, toughness and football background to be developed. His two-way experience gives him a useful base, and Utah’s defensive line tradition gives him a clear pathway.

The Bottom Line

Jackson West gives Utah another in-state trench prospect with the traits to develop on the defensive line. His two-way background at Corner Canyon should help him as he transitions into a full-time defensive role, especially because he already understands leverage, contact and the physical demands of line play. The polish still has to come, but the foundation is there.

For Utah, this is the kind of commitment that makes sense: local, physical, developmental and aligned with the program’s defensive identity.

West may need time, but Utah has built a lot of good defensive linemen by betting on exactly that kind of profile.
