SALT LAKE CITY The heartbeat of the Utah offense this season will officially return in 2026.

Devon Dampier is back for another run with the Utes, and while the program will look different, the offensive centerpiece remains in-place.

Morgan Scalley immediately made it clear that his priorities are retaining key talent and reloading aggressively in the transfer portal — not just riding on past success.

Following the hire of Kevin McGiven and the rest of the offensive staff, the Utes have gone to work in the portal to reload at the skill positions around the quarterback position.

Why Devon Dampier Returning Matters

Dynamic dual-threat production

As he recovers from a surgery last week on two sports hernias— which he battled through most of the season according to sources close to Dampier, the engine of the Utah offense could be capable of even more next season.

The box score tells you he was excellent: 2,490 passing yards with 24 touchdowns to just five interceptions, while also rushing for 835 yards and 10 scores — a rare combo of efficient, mistake-averse passing and explosive playmaking with his legs that few FBS QBs can match.

Add in a 63.5% completion rate, a 146.8 passer rating, and his total offense (passing + rushing) averaging nearly 277 yards per game, and you’re talking impact quarterback. Those kinds of numbers don’t just fill stat sheets — they shape game plans.

A quarterback with that kind of dual-threat ability forces defenses to defend the entire field: play him honest with the pass and he can take over with his legs; stack the box and he’s shown the accuracy and decision-making to pick apart secondaries.

Leadership in the locker room

Perhaps even more valuable than the numbers is what Devon Dampier meant to the vibe of the program — and how dramatically that shifted from 2024 to 2025.

Utah didn’t just get more productive at quarterback. It got more confident. More humble. More team-first. Dampier changed the emotional temperature of the building.

In 2024, Utah often felt like it was trying to survive games — grinding, managing, hoping not to blink first. In 2025, it played like it expected to win them comfortably.

That difference matters, and it starts at quarterback. Dampier brought visible swagger without slipping into recklessness. He played free, trusted his preparation, and gave the offense permission to be creative rather than cautious.

With a new head coach and offensive staff entering 2026, having a proven leader who has already lived through the grind of a Big 12 season brings stability that can’t be replicated on the recruiting trail or in the portal.

Teammates consistently pointed to his work ethic, calm in pressure situations, and command of the huddle as reasons Utah stayed balanced and resilient all season. When things tilted, Dampier didn’t flinch — and neither did the offense.

That’s culture-setting behavior. That’s a quarterback pulling a program forward rather than just operating within it.

Devon Dampier’s Las Vegas Bowl Performance

Utah capped the 2025 season with a 44–22 victory over Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl, and Dampier wasn’t just efficient — he dominated. He was named game MVP after accounting for five total touchdowns, completing 19-of-31 passes for 310 yards and two scores, while rushing for 148 yards and three more touchdowns.

That combination of arm and legs helped lift Utah to 535 total yards of offense and snapped the Cornhuskers’ early 14-7 lead with a 37-point unanswered surge.

Dampier also set program benchmarks in the process — becoming the first Ute since at least 1995 to throw for 300+ and rush for 100+ yards in the same game and setting a new Utah single-season rushing yardage mark as part of a record-breaking ground attack.

Utah’s Portal Activity

Scalley’s first weeks on the job have seen Utah be surprisingly active in the transfer portal:

Additions include:

  • Wide receivers Braden Pegan (Utah State) and Kyri Shoels (San Jose State), both familiar with new offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven.
  • Running back Steve Chavez-Soto (San Jose State) to add depth to the room.
  • Center Isaiah Kema (Ohio State), tackle Cedric Jefferson (Montana State) gives Utah two qualities pieces on the offensive line.
  • Safety Marcus Wimberly (Oklahoma), cornerback Elijah Reed (Akron), cornerback James Chenault (USF), Nicholas Brown (Lamar), Earl Parker (Hutchinson CC) all fill important spots in the secondary.
  • Defensive end Ethan Day (North Texas), along with tackles Lucas Samsula (Wyoming), Jamal Wallace (Tennessee), and Jireh Moe (San Jose State) — bolstering depth across the defensive line of scrimmage.

The Bottom Line

Devon Dampier’s decision to return isn’t just a roster note — it’s Utah’s most significant offseason win.  Fans need to appreciate what he truly meant to this Utah program.

His confidence, swagger, and willingness to battle through pain meant a lot to the improved culture in the locker room and the turnaround from 2024 to 2025.

He’s the engine that drove Utah’s explosive offense in 2025, finishing with 2,490 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 835 rushing yards with 10 rushing scores, while earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors and All-Conference recognition.

His return gives stability at the game’s most critical position amid staff turnover and a busy transfer portal — that matters for teammates, recruits and coaches.

With Dampier still at the controls, Utah begins 2026 with a proven leader, a high-octane offense built around him, and a clear identity they can refine rather than reinvent.
