SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former University of Utah tailback, Devonta’e Henry-Cole, has entered the transfer portal, according to KSL Sports and Utezone host Steve Bartle.

Henry-Cole has spent the previous four seasons with the University of Utah amassing 469 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns on 90 carries. His career at Utah has been filled with ups and downs. During his sophomore campaign in 2017, Henry-Cole played in all 12 games while adding 55 carries for 279 yards and 2 touchdowns and seemingly broke onto the scene. He was expected to burst onto the scene in 2018, however, a fractured arm during fall camp derailed his plans and limited the explosive back to use his redshirt season.

Henry-Cole was yet stranded on the running back depth chart in 2019 after being named the backup to Zack Moss entering the fall of 2019. Following the season’s end, in which Henry-Cole ran for 188 yards, 3 touchdowns on just 34 carries, Henry-Cole fell down the depth and ended being behind Moss, Devin Brumfield, and Jordan Wilmore when it comes to carries.

News regarding his departure comes to no surprise. With just one more year of eligibility remaining it is time Henry-Cole puts his career first and finds a school that allows him to thrive as a three-down back. Utah was not going to be able to offer him that, with Jordan Wilmore and Devin Brumfield expected to have most of the carries entering 2020, it seemed as though that the writing was on the wall for Henry-Cole on the hill.

Potential Landing Spots

Henry-Cole hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Could a move back home be on the horizon for Henry-Cole? Or does he stay in the state of Utah and join forces with the likes of Kalani Sitake at BYU or Gary Anderson at Utah State? After all, Henry-Cole was on the Utah roster when Anderson spent his second stint coaches the defensive line in 2018.

Rumors also started surfacing at the start of the 2019 season following Utah’s 30-12 routing of the BYU Cougars, in which Henry-Cole did not see one carry. Supposedly, Henry-Cole was overheard speaking with BYU head coach Kalani Sitake post-game asking if he had a spot on the roster for him. It would make sense, with the departure of Ty’Son Williams to the NFL, the Cougars are in need of a running back. For Henry-Cole, it helps that BYU’s offensive line is highly touted heading into the 2020 season after they were recently listed as the 12th best offensive line unit in the country in 2019.

Henry-Cole was also baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint a few years ago. More information that could help us predict his next move.

Henry-Cole is destined to bring touchdowns and yards on the ground to whatever team he chooses to join in 2020.
