Utah Football: Jaren Kump’s Consistency, Confidence Vital To Leading This Team

SALT LAKE CITY—As a seasoned veteran on Utah’s offensive line, Jaren Kump has seen and played a lot of football, from grueling practices to key moments in big games.
After his initial years were hampered by injury, Kump has become a steady force for the Utes. The former Herriman High School product has played 47 career games, making 29 starts.
He has appeared at every position along the line, tallying 17 starts at center the past two years. Now entering a pivotal season, the center knows that his leadership is vital to Utah’s chances.
Being named captain for Utah is an honor not lost on Jaren Kump
Kump was named captain, along with Spencer Fano, Logan Fano, and Lander Barton. This designation is not something Kump takes for granted, and he’s looking to embrace his role as a leader, not just by his words but through his actions.
“It is the biggest honor that honestly I can think of. I’m so fortunate that my teammates see me as a guy who can fulfill that role as a captain,” Kump said. “I will do everything I can to earn it every single day.”
Being named a captain of the team is a high honor, and it was clear as day how much it meant to him.
Leadership has been key to setting a new standard for Utah football
This mentality is exactly what Utah’s offensive line needs going into the season. With new faces joining the team, genuine leadership, particularly from those who have spent time in the program, is crucial to maintaining a strong culture.
“I think it’s just over 50% of this team is brand new, so there are a lot of new guys, but the thing I love is that everyone’s buying in,” Kump explained. “The older guys are really pushing to re-establish what our standard is every single day in practice and workouts.”
This commitment to a higher standard, especially amidst turnover, speaks to the mindset of the veterans on the team. This is a group that is working hard to right the ship and get Utah back to a higher level of play.

The Utah offensive line is all about proving it this season
“We’re really flattered by all the talk, all the positive talk, but in reality, our attitude as an O-line is that we haven’t proved anything,” Kump shared. “Preseason accolades in reality don’t mean anything; no one’s going to remember those.”
Under the watchful eye of offensive line coach Jim Harding, Kump has been tasked with growing as both a player and a communicator. “He’s got to be consistent with his physicality. He’s got to be clear and concise and confident in how he’s directing the calls up front,” Harding said. “I thought he got better at that in the spring, and he’s got to continue to do that this fall. Be physical and be confident in his communication.”
The center’s role in calling out protections, directing the line, and maintaining focus throughout the game is crucial, and Kump embraces this responsibility with passion and purpose. In a lot of ways, Kump is the point guard of the offensive line, and the unit’s overall performance is a reflection of that communication.
“We’ve got a lot coming up this year, and so we are working every single day to get better and to put ourselves in a position to live up to our expectations,” Kump said. “That’s the attitude we have, is we’ve got to come out and prove everything that we believe we are.”

Devon Dampier has built a strong relationship with his linemen
Utah’s new quarterback has been quick to praise the relationship he’s building with Kump and the rest of the offensive line.
“I know they’ve got my back,” Dampier said. “I’m happy I’m able to build that relationship with my offensive linemen, where it’s more than just ‘You block for me, you’re doing what you’re supposed to, and I’m behind you throwing the ball.’ There’s a lot more to it than that.”
Kump reciprocates the respect, praising Dampier’s commitment to the team.
“He’s an outstanding quarterback and teammate. I think he’d be okay if I said he’s taken us out to eat, I don’t even know how many times as an entire offensive line. He’s a team guy, and he’s an awesome addition to the locker room,” Kump said. “He’s really here with the boys. That’s going to help us just give that little half-second longer of protection.”
It’s this level of camaraderie that leads to “the vibes” being so different around this year’s team, and what is so vital to the Utes’ potential this season.
All in all, Kump’s commitment and determination to lead the right way will be at the forefront of this potential get-right season for Utah.
