Leach Calls Team ‘Soft, Fat, Dumb, Happy, Entitled’ After Loss To Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Washington State head coach Mike Leach was very critical of his team after they lost 38-13 to the Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night.

It was WSU’s second straight loss.

“We are a very soft team,” Leach said in his postgame press conference. “We get a lot of good press, we like to read it a lot, we like to pat ourselves on the back and if we get any resistance, we fold.”

Leach didn’t hold anything back when talking to the media after the Cougars failed to score any points in the second half against the Utes.

“What’s amazing about this is that most of these guys were on the same team last year that was a tough team,” Leach said. “Last year’s team was a tough team for us and we have nearly the same guys and now all of a sudden they are not tough.”

He went on to talk about how disappointed he is in his team and their lack of fight.

“They are fat, dumb, happy and entitled,” Leach stated. “I think we have a bunch of free agents running around thinking that they are pretty special and then as soon as something doesn’t go their way, they want to pout. I think it is more collectively soft.”

Washington State had a 32-point lead midway through the third quarter against UCLA two weeks ago and lost 67-63 to the Bruins at home.

“I really think that over the off-season despite the fact that we worked hard in the off-season and we worked hard in camp, then we get to the season and I think some collection of sitting around the apartments all the time, talking about how great we are going to be and it evolves into how easy it is going to be and then once we face resistance, we don’t even fight it. We didn’t fight it today (against Utah). Then what we did was pout, then when we pout, they think that somebody is going to feel sorry for him, but that’s not what they think. They think they are a really soft person.”

At the end of his rant, Leach took the blame for his team being so soft.

“Coaching-wise, we have failed to get through to them,” Leach mentioned. “I don’t see too much pouting among coaches, but collectively starting with me, we have failed to get through to them and we let them evolve into a soft team and they are soft.”
