SALT LAKE CITY — Morgan Scalley has given Utah football fans plenty to celebrate so far this season. Nine wins. An unbeaten conference record. A victory over BYU that ended the Cougars’ winning streak in the rivalry and kept the Utes’ biggest ambitions intact.

He has also given them greater confidence in where the program is going.

That may be the most meaningful accomplishment of his first season as head coach. The results are significant, but so is the belief taking hold around them. Players are invested in one another. The program has momentum. Fans have reasons to imagine what November could become and what might follow.

Saturday’s 28-20 victory over BYU gave that belief its most emotional validation yet.

Utah surrendered a two-touchdown lead, entered halftime trailing and recovered to protect its unbeaten season. In a game that tests composure as much as talent, the Utes found their footing and took control.

“The reason I believe that we won today is our guys made it about us, not about them,” Scalley said.

Nine games into his tenure, that shared sense of purpose is becoming one of Utah’s greatest strengths.

Building belief through trust

Scalley inherited a program he helped build, one with conference championship expectations, major bowl victories and an identity that commanded respect. His responsibility was to carry it forward while getting people invested in his leadership and vision.

That work began long before the season. Devon Dampier has described Scalley’s consistent support through a difficult offseason and his recovery from surgery.

“He came through every single time,” Dampier said.

The interactions then, help explain the trust now. Scalley demonstrated his commitment before asking players to follow him through the pressure of an unbeaten season. When games have become difficult, they have continued to believe in each other.

Saturday tested that confidence. Utah’s 14-0 lead became a 20-14 halftime deficit as the offense struggled to sustain possessions and the defense searched for answers.

The Utes responded with a second-half shutout. Dampier accounted for four touchdowns, and Trey Reynolds and Nate Ritchie delivered the late interceptions that protected the victory.

That recovery required preparation, execution and composure. Utah kept competing through the frustration, remained composed, and found the answers needed for the win.

Against BYU, those qualities helped Utah steady itself and finish. The belief Scalley has cultivated held up when the Utes needed it most.

Giving “We Are Utah” a shared purpose

Scalley’s vision gives coaches, administrators, boosters, alumni and fans a place in what Utah is pursuing. Each group contributes differently, but the ambition is shared: help the program become everything it is capable of becoming.

“We Are Utah” gives that purpose a name.

Players contribute through their preparation and willingness to serve the team.

Coaches develop them and reinforce the expectations.

Administrators and boosters help provide the resources to compete.

Alumni maintain connections to the program’s history.

Fans create an environment that players feed off and recruits remember.

Scalley has made a compelling case that all of those contributions belong to the same effort.

His own commitment strengthens that message. Scalley loves the University of Utah, that’s clear as day and his investment is genuine. He asks people to invest in a place he has invested in himself.

Scalley takes the responsibility to improve Utah to heart, and his enthusiasm invites others to take ownership alongside him.

It would be impossible to measure every supporter’s buy-in. But the connection between what Scalley asks of the program and what his team delivers is becoming easier for everyone around Utah to see.

Saturday gave those people a moment to celebrate together. It also gave them another reason to believe their commitment is contributing to something worth investing in.

Turning excitement into momentum

Winning creates excitement. Repeatedly finding answers creates confidence. And Utah has provided both.

At 9-0 overall and 6-0 in Big 12 play, the Utes have made their championship ambitions tangible. Fans can look toward the remaining schedule knowing the team has earned an opportunity to accomplish something significant.

Recruits can evaluate a vision that is producing results. They can see a competitive team, an invested crowd and players whose development has put them in position to deliver in important moments.

That makes Scalley’s message more compelling. The staff can explain what Utah offers with a season unfolding in front of them that illustrates the possibilities.

There is still work required to turn attention into commitments and enthusiasm into sustained support. But Scalley has given prospects a lot to like about the program.

Bigger plans, stronger conviction for Utah football

Saturday did not eliminate Utah’s shortcomings. Offensive mistakes and missed opportunities made the comeback necessary, and the remaining schedule will continue to test the Utes.

Scalley’s next responsibility is making sure the satisfaction of beating BYU carries into preparation for Arizona.

Dampier’s postgame assessment suggested the players understand that.

“We got bigger plans than just this win right here,” he said.

That echoed the perspective Scalley established before the rivalry matchup.

“This is a big one,” Scalley said. “It’s not the big one. It’s a big one, just like last week was a big one.”

For Scalley, the ultimate destination is the national championship game. Beating BYU was a significant step toward Utah’s larger ambitions, and his quarterback’s response suggested that perspective has taken hold.

Utah can appreciate what the rivalry means while recognizing what the season has made possible. Fans should be allowed to do the same.

Scalley has helped create a team worth enjoying and a direction worth believing in. He has given the people around Utah a shared pursuit, then backed that pursuit with results that make it increasingly credible.

“We Are Utah” carries more weight now because more people can see their part in it — and what they might accomplish together.
