SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – With involvement in both sides of the Utah/BYU rivalry, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham won’t say nice things about the Cougars.

We already knew how deep that rivalry ran for Kyle Whittingham because he would never say BYU around the media, even during the week of the game. It was always “the in-state game.”

During Pac-12 Media Day in Hollywood, Whittingham joined R.J. Young of FOX Sports and had a fun interview.

Young asked Whittingham to say three nice things about his rival. Whittingham asked him which rival because they have rivals in-conference and rivals out of conference.

Young clarified that he was asking about BYU.

“Oh the in-state game,” Whittingham said. “The dynamic has changed so much because we are no longer in the same conference. We were in the same conference forever, so it’s changed. We started to develop a little bit of a rivalry with USC, Colorado, Arizona State. There are some things that are starting to materialize inside the Pac-12 so that’s why I asked that question.”

After pausing for two seconds, Whittingham finally got around to answering the original question.

“Yeah, let’s skip to the next question. I don’t know how to address it, which way to go with it,” Whittingham stated.

Utah will travel to Provo to face BYU on Saturday, September 11 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
