Utah Brings Back Andy Ludwig As Offensive Coordinator

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – University of Utah head football coach Kyle Whittingham announced that they have hired Andy Ludwig as the next offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, bringing Ludwig back to Salt Lake City for his second stint with the Utes.

Ludwig was the offensive play-caller for the Utes from 2005-08, including the 2008 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama.

“It’s great to have Andy back on our staff,” said Whittingham. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a collegiate offensive coordinator, as well as being an outstanding quarterbacks coach and recruiter. Andy is obviously very familiar with our program which should make for a seamless transition.”

The Ogden, Utah native left the Utes after that season to join a Power-5 program when he was hired as the offensive coordinator for California. Ludwig spent two seasons in Berkeley before calling plays for San Diego State for two seasons.

Ludwig joined Gary Andersen at Wisconsin for two seasons before spending the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator with Vanderbilt.

“My family and I are very excited to return to the University of Utah,” said Ludwig. “I have great respect and appreciation for the University’s commitment to the student-athletes, Coach Whittingham’s leadership, and the passion of the Ute fan base. I look forward to the hard work and am grateful for this opportunity.”

He started coaching in 1987 when he was the wide receivers coach at his alma mater Portland State for two seasons before going to Idaho State for three seasons as the quarterbacks coach. He was a graduate assistant for Utah during the 1992 season.

Ludwig made stops to Augustana, Boise State, Cal Poly, Fresno State and Oregon from 1993-2002 when he was hired by Kyle Whittingham after the Fiesta Bowl season in 2004.

He will take over for Troy Taylor, who left to be the Sacramento State head coach. Ludwig will have plenty of talent returning for the 2019 season, including quarterback Tyler Huntley, running back Zack Moss, wide receivers Britain Covey, Solomon Enis, Samson Nacua and Jaylen Dixon. He will also have three offensive line starters back.
