Utah Baseball To Open New Era With First Game At America First Ballpark

SALT LAKE CITY — After 30 years playing off-campus, Utah Baseball will play it’s home-opener at a ballpark on its own campus.

Friday night marks the long-awaited debut of Charlie Monfort Field At America First Ballpark, as the Utes host Grand Canyon in the inaugural game at the new facility — the first of a four-game opening series that runs March 6–9 in Salt Lake City.

Head coach Gary Henderson said the significance of the weekend isn’t lost on anyone inside the program.

“We’re thrilled to be at home this weekend and finally open up the new ballpark,” Henderson said. “It’s been a long time coming, and we’re grateful to Mark Harlan, President Randall and all our community supporters who helped make this happen.”

For a program that spent nearly three decades playing its home games away from campus, the moment represents a major milestone — not just for the players and coaches, but for the trajectory of Utah baseball itself.

A Historic First Pitch For The Utes

Utah’s first game at America First Ballpark is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., beginning a four-game series against the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

The teams will also meet Saturday (2 p.m.), Sunday (1 p.m.), and Monday (noon) to complete the opening homestand.

The series will mark the first official games played at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, the new on-campus stadium built to give Utah baseball a permanent home. The venue seats up to 3,000 fans with a mix of chairback seating, standing room, and an outfield berm.

For decades, Utah played its home games primarily at Smith’s Ballpark in downtown Salt Lake City. The move to an on-campus facility consolidates the program’s locker rooms, training areas, and player development spaces under one roof for the first time.

Momentum Heading Into Opening Weekend

The Utes arrive home after an early-season road stretch that included trips through California, highlighted by a 13–4 win over Loyola Marymount earlier this week in which Utah erupted for 11 runs in the eighth inning.

Now the focus shifts to establishing the new ballpark as a home-field advantage.

“The ballpark has turned out fantastic and has everything our club needs under one roof,” Henderson said. “We’re excited to have our home fans supporting us starting this weekend.”

A Turning Point for the Program

Across college baseball, facilities often signal a program’s trajectory — and Utah’s new ballpark represents a significant investment in the future.

The stadium is the centerpiece of a $38 million project supported by America First Credit Union and major donor Charlie Monfort, the Colorado Rockies owner and Utah alumnus whose contribution helped bring the facility to life.

For Utah, the result is something the program has never truly had before: a home field embedded in the daily life of campus.

Weekend series, student crowds, spring afternoons in the outfield berm — the traditions that define college baseball now have a permanent place at the University of Utah.

The Bottom Line

Opening day always carries anticipation, this one carries history.

When Utah and Grand Canyon take the field Friday night, it will mark more than the start of a new series.

It will be the first chapter of Utah baseball’s new home — and the beginning of a new era for the program.

After years and years of waiting, the doors will open and soon it’ll be time to play ball.
