SALT LAKE CITY — Utah basketball continues to expand its international footprint this week, as the signing of German forward Alec Anigbata was announced by the Runnin’ Utes.

Anigbata becomes the sixth addition of Utah’s offseason cycle, joining Noam Yaacov, TJ Burch, Malek Gomma, Taison Chatman, and Jackson Holcombe — and further reinforcing the identity Alex Jensen and his staff are building through the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-9 forward will arrive in Salt Lake City with experience in Germany’s professional system, including time in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and the ProB developmental league. After going through the NBA’s pre-draft process last year, Anigbata returned to Germany and became somewhat of a hot commodity this cycle.

Anigbata received a lot of interest from high major programs, but key relationships worked in Utah’s favor and ultimately allowed them to seal the deal. At just 21 years old, Anigbata brings a level of professional seasoning that is uncommon for incoming college players — and one that aligns with the direction Utah is clearly heading under head coach Alex Jensen.

An German addition with pro experience

He began playing against older competition early, debuting with Bayern’s second team in the ProB — Germany’s third tier — as a teenager. That early exposure accelerated his development, forcing him to adjust to the physicality and pace of the professional game well ahead of most players his age.

After progressing through Bayern’s system, Anigbata signed with Ratiopharm Ulm in 2023 — a club widely regarded as one of Germany’s top development programs. Ulm competes in both the BBL and European competition, providing young players a pathway to high-level experience.

During the 2025–26 season, he averaged roughly 6 points and around 2 rebounds per game, while shooting efficiently —40-plus percent from 3-point range — in limited minutes against professional competition.

In the ProB league (more college-aged competition) last season, Anigbata averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, while converting on 37.4% from deep. Following his campaign, Anigbata then went through the pre-draft process before joining the top level team of Ratiopharm Ulm.

How Alec Anigbata fits Utah basketball’s roster rebuild

For Utah, this addition is less about raw production and more about completing the picture. Anigbata slots in primarily as a wing forward for the Utes.

With Yaacov established as the offensive engine, Holcombe as the versatile connector, Chatman providing spacing, Burch bringing defensive disruption, and Gomma anchoring the interior, Utah has clearly prioritized balance across its roster.

At 6-foot-9, Anigbata fits into that structure as a versatile, low-usage wing forward who can stretch the floor, play within a system, and contribute without needing to dominate the ball. The perimeter shooting at his size is an interesting dynamic that should give Jensen plenty of lineup flexibility.

He’s already played within structured offenses. He understands spacing. He’s been forced to defend and make decisions against older competition. That should shorten the learning curve — and add another layer of flexibility to Utah’s wing and frontcourt rotation.

The addition of Anigbata will provide a bit more lineup flexibility as well. Utah will have a number of backcourt combinations and with Anigbata’s versatility, that only adds to the list of potential personnel combinations.

The Bottom Line

The jump to the Big 12 is real — it’s one of the most physical, demanding leagues in college basketball, where toughness and execution show up every night. Big 12 Conference Players don’t ease into roles there. They either fit, or they get exposed.

Alec Anigbata isn’t being asked to come in and carry anything. He’s being asked to slot into a role, and his background suggests he’s built for exactly that. His experience, size, and ability to operate within structure give him a real pathway to contributing.

Zoom out, and this is what defines Utah’s offseason. They didn’t just stack talent — they built a roster with purpose. Yaacov runs the offense. Holcombe connects everything. Chatman spaces the floor. Gomma anchors the interior. Burch brings defensive edge. And Anigbata adds versatility and shooting on the wing.
