SALT LAKE CITY— It’s official: Utah left tackle Caleb Lomu announced on social media that he’s declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft, ending his Utah Utes career early and betting on his pro potential.

At 6-foot-6 and roughly 308 pounds, Lomu leaves Salt Lake City as one of the most physically gifted tackles to wear a Ute uniform.

A former four-star recruit out of Highland High in Gilbert, Arizona, he blossomed quickly once he claimed the left tackle gig — starting all 12 games in 2025 and earning All-Big 12 First Team honors while anchoring one of the better offensive lines in the conference.

The Tape Doesn’t Lie

Caleb Lomu’s rise isn’t some feel-good draft narrative — it’s grounded in measurable performance and elite tape traits that NFL evaluators can’t ignore. This isn’t hype; it’s a consensus from positional rankings, advanced metrics, and multiple scouting boards.

Across the board, draft evaluators have Lomu in serious consideration as a Day 1 selection — a rare outcome for a tackle with only two full seasons starting but absurd physical tools and production.

Many boards have him inside the top ten tackles in the class, and analysts tease him as one of the very few 2026 offensive linemen worthy of a first-round grade.

Scouts regularly highlight that Lomu did not allow a sack in his most recent full season of starts — and surrendered only a handful of pressures despite heavy snap counts against high-end Power 5 edge rushers. His ability to keep rushers in front of him shows advanced footwork and chase-down balance for a tackle his size.

In 807 career pass blocking snaps, Lomu allowed just 2 sacks and 25 total pressures. This past season, he conceded 0 sacks and just 8 pressures in 382 pass blocking snaps.

According to analytics outfits like Pro Football Focus, his run-blocking grade ranked among the nation’s best for offensive tackles — clear evidence he’s more than just a pass protector. His impact run-block rate also jumped into elite territory, putting real meat on the claim that he moves defenders off the ball.

Multiple mock drafts place him inside the top 20–30 prospects nationally, and some boards have elevated him into pure OT1 status in this class, stressing that his combination of athleticism and on-field production makes him a plug-and-play bookend.

Strengths That Translate

Modern NFL offenses live and die by elite tackles, and Lomu hits all the key scouting boxes — length, athleticism, foot quickness, plus a film study IQ that belies his experience.

  • Elite Movement & Athleticism – At 6-foot-6 and roughly 308 pounds, Lomu combines length with rare lateral mobility. He can mirror speed rushers in space, and his coordination allows him to recover quickly when an edge defender tries to bend around him. That mobility also pays dividends in zone-blocking schemes — he doesn’t just block a man, he moves in motion, sealing defenders on the perimeter and executing reach blocks with ease.

  • Pocket Presence That Holds Up – Pass protection is where Lomu currently shines most. Not allowing a sack across a full slate of starts isn’t just a stat — it’s a reflection of his consistency against high-end competition. Whether he’s resetting on inside counters or handling delayed blitzes, he shows instinctive awareness and balance.
  • Impact in the Run Game – Lomu isn’t content to be a one-dimensional blocker. In Utah’s ground attack — which finished among the best in the Power Conference — he consistently finishes blocks, opens lanes, and sustains leverage against defenders at the point of attack. That run-game impact is a tangible metric NFL teams covet — especially in schemes that value linemen who dominate in both phases.

When you strip away the buzzwords, what scouts point to is this: Lomu has the physical traits to be a long-term NFL starter, and the tape, the production, and the potential back it up.

The Bottom Line

For Utah, this isn’t a surprise — Lomu’s trajectory has pointed here since he burst onto the scene last season. His level of play went up a level this season, which speaks to the development at Utah. But losing a cornerstone like him changes the calculus up front in 2026. Utah will have to replace anchor play and leadership on the blind side, and that’s a tough ask no matter what conference you’re in.

In the NFL, though? Left tackles who can protect the franchise quarterback and open holes in the run game don’t grow on trees. Lomu’s decision to come out now signals confidence in his game and readiness for the pro grind — and it puts him on the clock next spring, one of the more intriguing linemen in a draft class that’s still shaking out.
