Utah Can’t Get Past Washington; Suffers Second Straight Loss

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah couldn’t make baskets consistently, shooting just 33 percent. Washington picked up a 69-53 win over the Utes, getting a win over Utah for the first time in Salt Lake City since 2012.

Washington held Utah to a season-low 53 points.

Jayce Johnson scored 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shots to lead the Utes, while Donnie Tillman chipped in 10 points.

Nahziah Carter had 18 points for the Huskies with David Crisp adding 17 points.

Washington jumped out to a 9-2 lead early before the Utes answered with a 5-0 run to trail 9-7.

But Utah kept it close before ending the first half shooting just one of six from the field and Washington had their largest lead of the game 38-30 at halftime.

The Utes leading scorer Sedrick Barefield had just three points on one-of-four shooting from the field in the first half. Donnie Tillman led the Utes with eight points at the break.

Washington had two players in double figures in the first half with David Crisp scoring 14 points while Nahziah Carter added 11 points to combine for 25 of the Huskies 38 first half points.

The Huskies bumped their lead to 15 points early in the second half but Utah responded with a 5-0 run to trail 47-39 with 14 minutes left in the game.

The Utes cut the lead to five points with 13 minutes left before Washington stopped the momentum with five unanswered points.

After the timeout, the Huskies went on a 12-2 run to lead 59-44 with 7 minutes left. Both teams were scoreless for the next 4 minutes before Jayce Johnson hit a pair of free-throws. Washington answered when Utah finally made a bucket.

Washington was up 61-47 with 3:44 left heading into the final media timeout.


Up Next

Utah falls to 7-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Pac-12. They will face Washington State on Saturday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Cougars are 7-8 overall and 0-2 in Pac-12 play. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
