SALT LAKE CITY — Under the lights of the national spotlight, No. 24 Utah delivered the kind of performance against No. 17 Cincinnati that reinforces identity, the home-field advantage of Rice-Eccles Stadium, and the Utes chances in the title hunt.

The Utes enjoyed an efficient first half and big momentum plays in the third quarter to pull away from the Bearcats, securing a 45–14 win in a ranked Big 12 showdown in the late night of Salt Lake City.

The Utes finished with nearly 500 total yards of offense, over 40 minutes in time of possession, and cruised to the finish line with authority. Thanks to a handful of surprising contributions and big plays, the Utes built up a rather comfortable lead going into the final period.

Devon Dampier accounted for 291 yards, 213 through the air, 78 on the ground, and two touchdowns. Wayshawn Parker eclipsed triple-digits for the second-straight game, running for 104 yards and one score. Ryan Davis totaled 132 yards and one touchdown on eight receptions.

The defense turned Cincinnati into an efficient offense, as Brendan Sorsby completed just 11-of-33 passes, which did include an 88 yard touchdown to Cyrus Allen. But the inefficiency in the passing game is a credit to the Utah secondary and is what really allowed the offense to take control of the game.

Given the setting and stage, this was a big win for the Utes. The team continues to make improvements, and now they hit their second bye week of the season, which comes at just the right time before the home stretch of the season.

Utah’s strong first half effort vs Cincinnati

Statistically, the opening 30 minutes were closer in feel than in result. The stat sheet at halftime — 313 total yards for the Utes, 244 for the Bearcats. The separation came from one team’s ability to finish drives, while the other left the field empty handed.

The Utes connected on chunk plays early and often. Davis was the tone-setter, hauling in receptions of 46 and 34 yards, and finishing the half with 104 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Bray added his own pair of explosive gains (20 and 21 yards) to keep Cincinnati’s safeties stretched and honest.

On the ground, Wayshawn Parker provided balance and explosive efficiency with his carries. He finished with 74 first-half rushing yards and a 40-yard score, repeatedly forcing missed tackles and churning out yards after contact.

Cincinnati moved the ball effectively between the 20s — quarterback Brendan Sorsby led multiple drives into scoring territory — but Utah’s defense tightened when it mattered. The Bearcats crossed midfield on three first-half possessions and came away with just one score, a short Sorsby keeper. The other two times, the Utes forced empty trips, a defining difference in the game’s early tone.

Utah took a 24-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Utah overcomes 3rd quarter mishaps to maintain their lead

The Bearcats opened the second half with the spark they needed. After Utah’s opening possession stalled, Orion Phillips pinned Cincinnati at the 12. But on the second snap of the series, Sorsby fired a perfect deep ball to Cyrus Allen, who outran the secondary for an 88-yard touchdown, slicing the lead to 24–14 and silencing the stadium — briefly.

Utah responded with a poised, methodical drive that appeared destined for points, until a false start and a reverse gone backward set up 3rd-and-long. Devon Dampier, protected well, took a shot toward the goal line but was intercepted by Cincinnati’s Christian Harrison, swinging momentum sharply back toward the visitors.

The moment loomed — and Utah’s defense erased it. A three-and-out, exactly when the game needed resolve.

Mana Carvalho provided knockout punch

The stop set up one of the game’s central turning points. Mana Carvalho, weaving through traffic on the ensuing punt return, ripped off 23 yards, giving Utah possession near midfield.

The offense capitalized, marching into the red zone with the run game before Creed Whittemore caught a pass and then broke through multiple tackles on a catch-and-run touchdown to reclaim control and push the lead back to 31–14.

On Cincinnati’s next possession, Utah forced yet another punt — and Carvalho delivered the knockout blow.

This time: 75 yards. To the house. Slicing through the punt coverage, accelerating, and the Rice-Eccles crowd-erupting.

That gave Utah the 38–14 just before the end of the quarter.

From there, the Utes added another takeaway, as Levani Damuni recovered another fumble. That setup Byrd Ficklin and the offense with a very short field, and the Utes added a 4th quarter touchdown with Ficklin punching it in.

Utah’s 45-14 win over Cincinnati

With the win, Utah not only protected home turf on a national stage, but reasserted the identity that has defined the program under Kyle Whittingham: physicality, composure, and timely playmaking. The offense showed balance and explosiveness, the defense proved it can bend without breaking, and special teams swung the game when it mattered most.

Now, the conversation shifts forward.

The Utes remain firmly in the Big 12 title hunt with confidence, momentum, and clarity in who they are. If they continue to pair their offensive efficiency with suffocating situational defense — and if their quarterback room stays healthy — Whittingham’s squad is positioned to make November very real, very interesting, and very Utah.
