SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After the spring football game on Saturday, head coach Kyle Whittingham gave more details on the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship.

Utah allowed 6,500 fans to attend the spring game and all of the ticket sales would go towards the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship fund. The football team wore special helmets to honor the life of running back Ty Jordan.

While still dealing with the tragic loss of Jordan, Whittingham has to still focus on finding productive running backs. When he spoke to the media after the spring game, Whittingham went into further detail about the mourning process and what they will do with the scholarship in Jordan’s name.

“Ty’s loss is…I don’t know what more I can say that I haven’t already said. It’s a tragic situation and is something that is on the minds of our players constantly,” Whittingham said. “The emblem we had on the side of the helmet and sweatshirts that you saw with ‘Long Live Ty Jordan.’ We want to continue to keep him at the forefront of our minds and every dollar that was taken in today by tickets goes to his scholarship fund. We will name a player this fall that is the recipient of the Ty Jordan Scholarship. That will occur during fall camp. That is something that we plan on keeping alive and going for years to come.”

On Thursday night – two days before the spring game – Utah football tweeted out photos of the helmets that will be worn in the spring game. On one side of the helmet, Utah has the drum and feather logo. On the other side is the number two on the right side and then another number two that is backwards that makes a heart. In the middle of the heart is the letters LLTJ which stands for “Long Live Ty Jordan.”

Just below the heart with the number 22 – which was Jordan’s number as a freshman at Utah – is the block U logo.

It’s unknown if the special helmets will be a permanent thing moving forward or if they will only be around for the 2021 season or if this is just for the spring football game.

Jordan tragically died on Christmas night in Denton, Texas near his hometown to an accidental self-inflicted gun shot wound. In his freshman season with the Utes, Jordan rushed for 597 yards and six touchdowns. He was named Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American by 247Sports.
