Utah Football Adds Veteran Inoke Breckterfield as Defensive Ends Coach

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has bolstered its defensive staff with a seasoned front-seven architect, as head coach Morgan Scalley named Inoke Breckterfield as the team’s new defensive ends coach.

Breckterfield — a Pac-10 All-American and Morris Trophy winner during his playing days at Oregon State — arrives in Salt Lake City with more than two decades of experience coaching defensive lines at the highest levels of college football.

“Inoke has one of the most impressive resumes in college football and has a proven track record of recruiting and developing elite pass rushers,” Scalley said in the official press release. “He is a perfect fit for the RSNB culture, and I can’t wait for our defensive ends to learn from him.”

His résumé includes key stops in the Big Ten, SEC, Pac-12, ACC, and now the Big 12, with a track record of producing disruptive pass rushers and stout run defenders across multiple defensive fronts.

What He Brings to Utah

What stands out about Breckterfield — and what Utah fans will appreciate — is his blend of technique development, situational rush scheming, and ability to draw out physical play from his linemen.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to be a part of a program with the defensive history of Utah,” Breckterfield said. “The Utes have always been known to play with relentless effort on the defensive side of the ball. I want to thank Coach Scalley for the opportunity, and I look forward to getting to SLC and working with our players!”

He’s coached in 3-4 and 4-3 fronts, mentored nationally recognized defensive linemen, and shown a consistent ability to coach to the needs of the scheme.

He also brings a history of identifying and elevating talent. His resume includes elite defenders who went on to earn All-Conference honors and enter the NFL, and his ability to connect with players from diverse backgrounds has been cited as a key leadership strength throughout his career.

As a recruiter, Breckterfield has successfully recruited in pipeline states such as Texas, Hawaii, California, Washington, and Utah. He also adds to the midwest footprint thanks to his time with Wisconsin. Those relationships will be vital to Utah’s revamped recruiting efforts. He’s landed blue-chip prospects such as Nick Herbig and Anthony James, as well as diamonds in the rough like Keeanu Benton.

Inoke Breckterfield, Proven Defensive Line Coach

Breckterfield’s coaching career runs deep. After dominating on the edge at Oregon State — where he still ranks near the top of school history in sacks and tackles-for-loss — he transitioned into coaching with stops at Weber State and Montana before making the jump to Power Five roles with UCLA and Pitt.

His most lauded stretch came during six seasons at Wisconsin, where the Badgers regularly fielded one of the Big Ten’s most physical defensive lines. Wisconsin’s defensive fronts produced program-record sack totals, developed multiple All-Conference ends, and anchored defenses that ranked among the nation’s stingiest against both the run and the pass.

Following Wisconsin, Breckterfield coached at Vanderbilt and Washington, helping reestablish defensive line dominance in a stacked Pac-12. While at Washington, he worked with NFL prospects and helped the Huskies’ defensive front regain its identity against elite competition as the Huskies made it to the national championship game in 2023.

He’s spent the last two seasons with Baylor but made the move to Oregon State last month, before Utah entered the picture.

The Bottom Line

The addition of Breckterfield rounds out a defensive staff with a sharper edge. He has loads of experience and a proven track record of development.  Utah’s front end now boasts a coach with decades of hands-on experience coaching defensive linemen plus a reputation for turning good athletes into elite disruptors.

As the Utes aim to re-establish it’s dominant physicality up front and pressure quarterbacks more consistently in Big 12 play, Breckterfield should be a difference-maker.
