SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig is looking forward to designing plays in his offense around wide receiver Britain Covey.

Ludwig had Covey for four games last season before the former Timpview star redshirted to fully recover from the injury he suffered in the 2018 Pac-12 Championship game.

Now that Covey is back and healthy, Ludwig can begin designing schemes and plays that will make him a big part of the offense.

“I would put Britt Covey is like a Gorilla warfare player where I’m not saying that Britain Covey is an x-receiver, o-receiver, slot receiver, he’s everything,” Ludwig said. “He can line up as a running back, he’s gonna line up in the slot, on the perimeter. He’s going to move and getting out of the backfield, getting carries from the fly sweep positions, things like that. So I’ve talked with him about that, he is not a letter, you know. You have to be prepared to adapt and adjust, week in week out as we work to implement plays and design schemes that highlight his skills and abilities which he has a tremendous skill set. So again, he’s a fun player to work with. He’s way into it, and I can’t wait to get started with him today.”

As a true freshman in 2015, Covey had 43 receptions for 519 yards and 4 touchdowns. He increased his productivity in 2018 after returning from a two-year church mission to haul in 60 catches for 637 yards and one touchdown. Last season, Covey had just 10 catches for 77 yards.

Covey is also used on special teams as a kick and punt returner. Look for Covey to have a tremendous impact on Utah’s offense in 2020. The Utes will open the season on Saturday, November 7 against Arizona at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
