Utah Looking To Bounce Back Against Oklahoma State

Jan 30, 2026, 1:54 PM | Updated: 2:10 pm

SALT LAKE CITY — The margin for error is thin in the Big 12, and it gets thinner on Saturday when the Oklahoma State Cowboys visit the Utah Utes inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Alex Jensen’s ball club is coming off a tough road rivalry loss but return home where they earned their last victory, an 82-79 win over TCU the weekend prior.

Both teams are searching for traction in league play, and both teams have had a few days off to rest and hit the reset button ahead of the second half of league play.

Oklahoma State’s Season Story

The Cowboys started the season on a blistering pace. They won their first nine games of the season and even got to a 12-1 record before coming back to earth. The Cowboys enter this matchup with a 14-6, 2-5 record, owning a win over UCF and Kansas State in Big 12 play.

Oklahoma State hasn’t relied on a single star to stay competitive. Instead, the Cowboys have built an identity around pace, spacing, and shared scoring responsibility. They want possessions, they want movement, and they want defenses to make decisions—fast.

At the center of that approach is Anthony Roy, the Cowboys’ most reliable perimeter scorer and late-clock option. Roy’s ability to score at all three levels, averaging 17 points and 4 rebounds per game, while owning a 45/43/87 shooting split. He gives Oklahoma State a stabilizer when tempo spikes or possessions break down.

Around him, OSU rotates capable guards and physical bigs who punish missed rotations and turn defensive rebounds into quick offense. At 6-foot-10, 250 pounds, Parsa Falla presents a tough matchup at 14 points on 60% shooting and 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Cowboys’ inconsistency in conference play hasn’t come from offensive droughts so much as defensive lapses and rebounding swings.

Utah Looking To Bounce Back

Utah is coming off a loss to rival BYU. The loss dropped Utah to 9-11 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 play, illustrating a tough slog through one of the nation’s deepest conferences. Utah opened league play against top competition (including a loss to then-No. 1 Arizona) and has struggled to string wins together.

The losses have featured recurring themes — defensive rebounding issues, inconsistent interior scoring, and trouble controlling paint scoring.

But there have been encouraging flashes, moments, and stretches — in a hostile environment last weekend, Utah connected from deep at a 62 % clip (13-of-21), showing they can shoot with elite teams when in rhythm. They one of the nation’s top scorers in the Terrence Brown, and have shown progress to this point of the season.

If the Utes want to flip the script, they must show defensive toughness, limit second-chances, and sustain offensive balance. Doing so won’t just help Utah in this one; it can address the Big 12 skid and give the program some tangible momentum as league play grinds toward spring.

Key Matchups That Will Decide It

1. Tempo Control

Both teams come into this looking to score points. The Cowboys average 86.2 per game, while Utah is just a shade over 80 per game.

Utah’s statistical profile shows a team that scores efficiently in controlled sets but struggles when possessions get sloppy — particularly when turnovers or live-ball pressure get added into the mix. This makes when and how they run critical.

2. Brown vs. OSU’s Guard Depth

Brown is Utah’s centerpiece. He’s been responsible for a massive share of Utah’s scoring aggression and creation — Utah’s offense often looks to get him downhill early and force rotations.

That’s reflected in Utah’s assist and usage figures: they score well when ball movement creates space for him and the wider unit, but they also stagnate when forced into isolation scoring without efficient ball rotation.

Oklahoma State counters with a multi-layered guard group that rarely lets one scorer dictate the game. So, Brown will need to handle the different loos and tests these players will provide. In fact, Brown may need to become more of a facilitator in this one than he typically is.

3. The Glass

The rebound battle here has measurable bearings on projected outcomes.

Current matchup projections show Oklahoma State grabbing slightly more rebounds per game overall (38.1 vs. 36.6) and maintaining a small edge on both offensive and defensive boards.

That rebounding edge isn’t just theoretical: OSU’s defensive rebounding numbers are better positioned to limit Utah’s second-chance scoring, and their offensive rebounding gives them opportunities to reset possessions and generate easy buckets.

Utah, on the other hand, has struggled at times to secure boards against bigger frontcourts, and this has translated into more possessions per game for opponents — especially in losses where Utah allowed more offensive rebounds than they secured.

A positive rebound margin correlates strongly with winning in the Big 12: teams that control the boards tend to dictate possession flow, which is especially valuable in a league with explosive offenses and slim defensive margins.

Big 12 Context: Why This One Matters

In the Big 12 Conference standings, every win and every margin matters — and with the league’s middle logjam, this matchup has real implications.

Right now, the top half of the league includes one undefeated (Arizona), two one-loss teams (Houston, Texas Tech), three two-loss teams (Iowa State, BYU, Kansas), and two three-loss teams (UCF, West Virginia) in the league.

There bottom half of the league is the exact opposite. There are three five-loss teams (TCU, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State), three six-loss teams (Colorado, Arizona State, Utah), and two seven-loss teams (Baylor, Kansas State).

  • Oklahoma State stands at ~14-6 overall and 2-5 in league play, a win here lifts them closer to the Big 12’s middle tier and signals road viability.

  • Utah sits at ~9-11 overall and 1-6 in conference, looking to protect home court and add another win with important tiebreaker implications.

Right now, Utah’s sitting No. 14 in the league because both Baylor and Kansas State have one more loss. So, even though a win would just be Utah’s second this season, it would be pretty valuable, as it would keep them within striking distance of teams just above them in the standings.

The Bottom Line

This game is going to test Utah’s vulnerabilities but also play into their strengths a little. Who dictates style of play and the glass will have a great chance at the win. Utah needs to work hard to secure rebounds, particularly in the second half.

Oklahoma State thrives in up tempo games, where the Utes also play well but at the same time, Utah will want to be able to control the pace, while maintaining quality offensive execution. On the glass, Utah has struggled at times to secure boards against bigger front courts.

A positive rebound margin correlates strongly with winning in the Big 12: teams that control the boards tend to dictate possession flow, which is especially valuable in a league with explosive offenses and slim defensive margins.
