SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 13th ranked Utah Utes knocked off No. 17 Arizona State 21-3 despite committing four turnovers.

Utah’s defense was fantastic in the win as they held ASU’s freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels in check, completing four of his 18 pass attempts for just 25 yards and one interception.

It’s the first time in 125 games that Arizona State did not score 10 points or more in a game. It was tied with Louisiana Tech for the longest streak by and FBS team since 1936. It also snapped a 140-game streak of scoring at least 7 points.

Utes star defensive end Bradlee Anae had one of his best performances this season with three sacks and a deflected pass. He now has seven sacks this season.

Moss Finally Breaks Rushing Record

Entering the game against Arizona State, running back Zack Moss needed just 55 rushing yards to pass Eddie Johnson for the all-time leader in career rushing yards in Utah football history.

He rushed for a 32-yard touchdown run on his 21st carry of the game and broke the record in the fourth quarter putting the Utes up 21-3 over the Sun Devils.

Moss finished with 99 rushing yards on 25 carries with 2 touchdown runs. He needed one more yard to pass Devontae Booker and John White for the most 100-yard career rushing games in school history. Finally, Moss is now tied with Del Rodgers for the most career rushing touchdowns in school history.

Utes Dealt With Injuries To Key Players

In the second quarter in a three-play span, both Moss and quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered injuries.

Huntley went down first with a leg injury after getting tackled by an Sun Devil defender. Three plays later, Moss ran the ball up the middle and was hit in the helmet by an Arizona State defender, forcing the star running back to exit the game.

Evan Fields was called for targeting on the hit to Moss and was ejected after the officials reviewed the play.

Both players returned to the game but Huntley exited the game for the second time after hurting his leg again late in the third quarter. Before he left for the rest of the game, he went 12-of-19 passing for 171 yards and his first interception of the season. Huntley was the only power-five quarterback to have not thrown an interception until the Arizona State game, stopping a streak of 149 pass attempts without a pick.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is not sure of the status of Huntley.

“It’s something that we will have to wait until tomorrow to see,” Whittingham said.

Starting left tackle Darrin Paulo also hurt his leg in the game and Whittingham was uncertain of his status.

Up Next

The Utes improved to 6-1 on the season and are bowl eligible. They also picked up their third straight win and are 3-1 in Pac-12 play.

They will be back at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, October 26 to face the California Golden Bears at 8 p.m. on FS1.
