SALT LAKE CITY — For stretches Saturday night, Utah looked like a tougher, sharper team. For just enough possessions, they weren’t.

UCF shot 52.6% from the floor, scored 18 points off Utah turnovers, and survived a chaotic final minute to escape the Huntsman Center with a 73–71 win.

It was a game of runs. It was a game of adjustments. And ultimately, it was a game decided by execution — and one controversial whistle.

First Half: Defensive Edge, Then the 1-3-1 Shift

Utah opened the game with real defensive bite. The ball pressure was active, rotations were early, and UCF was forced to earn everything.

But with about 12 minutes left in the half, the Knights changed their defensive approach.

UCF switched into a 1-3-1 zone — long, active, disruptive. It slowed Utah’s rhythm, forced perimeter stagnation, and cut off easy driving lanes. The Utes shot just 2-for-11 from three in the first half and didn’t attempt a free throw before halftime.

Meanwhile, Themus Fulks went to work. He poured in 14 first-half points and finished with 24 on 11-of-24 shooting.

Utah did respond late in the first half though.

Out of the final media timeout, the Utes attacked gaps instead of settling. Better spacing. Quicker ball reversals. Interior touches. A 6-0 run trimmed the deficit, and momentum was shifting — until Fulks buried a jumper with three seconds left to send UCF into halftime up 41–36.

Second Half: Punch, Counterpunch

UCF stayed in the zone to start the second half. Utah’s first two possessions were empty. UCF scored on its first two trips. Suddenly it was a 44–36 game.

Then Utah got going. Don McHenry drilled a corner three. Terrence Brown followed with one from the top. Two defensive stops. Just like that, 44–42.

But here’s the issue — and it’s been consistent. When Brown and Keanu Dawes sit, the offense frays. Spacing collapses. Ball movement stalls. Possessions get ugly.

Utah finished with 11 turnovers, and UCF converted those into 18 points. That margin — 18 to 7 in points off turnovers — was decisive. Still, Utah wasn’t done.

An 8–0 run and the Huntsman roars

Midway through the second half, Utah delivered its best stretch of the night.

An 8–0 run over just over two minutes flipped the game. Brown attacked downhill. Dawes hit from deep. The crowd — quiet for long stretches — came alive.

The Huntsman was loud. Engaged. Invested. Utah took a 60–59 lead, then extended it to 62–59 and eventually 65–63 after Dawes knocked down a three.

Dawes finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds — a double-double with real impact. Brown added 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. McHenry caught fire late, scoring 17 in the second half alone.

But every time Utah surged, UCF had an answer.

The back-breakers

One of them was self-inflicted. Brown gambled for a steal on the wing. Completely leaving his man in the corner to try and poke the ball away from Jeremy Foumena. He missed. And Foumena hit Carmelo Pacheco who buried a wide-open corner three.

Utah answered again — Dawes drilled a three of his own.

But UCF shot 4-for-7 from three in the second half. Utah shot well late (6-for-12 from deep after halftime), but the Knights were more efficient overall and finished at 43.8% from beyond the arc.

And then came the final 13 seconds.

A questionable whistle

Down three with 13 seconds left, McHenry found himself open in the right corner and drilled the three to tie it 71–71. Huntsman eruption.

But with 3.7 seconds left, Seydou Traore was called for a foul on Fulks. The call? A shooting foul.

The problem? It appeared to occur before the gather — on the floor. That would have meant a 1-and-1 situation. Instead, Fulks was awarded two free throws.

He hit both. 73–71. Utah had to inbound without a timeout. Dawes heaved it to Okonkwo, who then found Brown, who tried a double-clutch three that missed.

The Bottom Line

Utah showed fight in this one. They adjusted to the different looks. They battled on the glass. The effort was there tonight.

Despite the improved effort, this league demands sustained effort and discipline. The lack of discipline allowed the Knights to score efficiently throughout the game:

  • UCF shot 52.6% from the field
  • UCF scored 44 points in the paint
  • UCF scored 18 points off turnovers to Utah’s 7
  • Utah won second-chance points 16–4
  • 16 lead changes. Three ties.

Live-ball turnovers. Defensive gambles. Stagnated possessions without Brown and Dawes. And one late whistle that will sting for a while.

But again, Utah’s margin for error is tiny. The difference in this game very well could be boiled down to Brown’s decision to gamble for a steal on the defensive end. Tough one for the Utes, this one was their’s for the taking.
