SALT LAKE CITY – After an intense matchup at the legendary Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan just over a month ago, it was Michigan’s turn to travel to Utah for an ACHA Division 1 women’s matchup.

The previous matchup between these two teams saw the Michigan Women’s team triumph 2-1 in overtime over Utah. Michigan came into tonight’s game boasting an impressive 6-2-1 record and is ranked the sixth-best team in the country, while the Utes were barely above water with a record of 8-7.

After the first period of tonight’s game concluded 0-0, it was looking like this game would also come down to the wire. Utah’s goaltender Samantha Griswold was turning away every shot she faced and the defense was doing well to keep Michigan’s scoring chances limited.

With 12:57 left in the first period, the dam broke and Michigan tallied their first goal of the night. After a turnover in the defensive zone by Utah, Julia Lindahl skated up from the corner and fired home a slapshot from just above the circles. From there on, it was all Michigan, concluding the period with a three-goal lead over Utah, who still had yet to score.

Needing a spark, Utah decided to switch goalies to start the third period. Miranda De Antunano came in for Griswold, who stopped 28 of the 31 shots she faced. It took three minutes for Michigan to get their first on De Antunano as Mariah Evans’ shot from the point bounced off of the goalie’s glove and into the net.

Robin Goldman would add another goal off an awkward deflection right in front of the net just two minutes later to bring the score to 5-0. The shot totals confirmed Michigan’s domination as they outshot Utah 42-17.

While this was Utah’s last game of the Beehive Showcase, Michigan plays in a top-10 matchup against the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in Salt Lake City on Sunday afternoon. Utah has a long break as they look to bounce back before they head to Bozeman to take on Montana State on January 15.
