SALT LAKE CITY— Utah didn’t just beat Boise State on Wednesday night — the Utes dismantled them. Behind a devastating second-quarter surge and a backcourt clinic from Lani White, LA Sneed, and fellow freshman Avery Hjelmstad, Utah enjoyed a 91–58 runaway at the Huntsman Center, showcasing a team that’s starting to find its identity — and its edge.

Through the first quarter, this looked like a really competitive basketball game. Then Utah got it rolling in the second, Boise State blinked, and the night was effectively over.

A 19–19 first quarter quickly gave way to a 28–10 Utah avalanche in the second, turning a tie game into an 18-point halftime lead. The Utes never looked back, stacking a second-half burst on top of the damage and cruising to a 91–58 win at the Huntsman Center.

This was Utah at full throttle: 51% from the field, 47% from three (14 makes), 56 rebounds, 25 assists, and a 33-point win that could’ve been even larger.

Lani White was the tone-setter and the flamethrower. She finished with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, went 5-for-5 from deep, grabbed 9 rebounds, and dished 6 assists. Utah was +30 with her on the floor — the kind of number that reflects total control.

La Sneed (17 points, 6 assists) and Chyra Evans (15 points, 8 rebounds) backed her with balance and efficiency, while Evelina Otto, Kamryn Mafua, Reese Ross, and Avery Hjelmstad all provided force off the bench.

Boise State actually shot the ball well from three (12-of-26), but everything else was a disaster: 32% shooting overall, only 12 free-throw attempts (making just four), and a brutal 56–28 rebounding deficit that turned every Utah miss into a second chance — and every Boise miss into a one-and-done.

Utah led by as many as 38 and never trailed after the 5:30 mark of the first quarter.

Takeaways: Utes Looks the Part of a Team Hitting Its Stride

1. Lani White played like an All-Conference guard

There’s efficient, and then there’s the performance Lani White just dropped:

  • 23 points

  • 9 rebounds

  • 6 assists

  • 5-for-5 from three

  • +30 on the floor

Her second-quarter takeover flipped the game. From hitting transition threes to elevating in the mid-range to making the extra pass, she dictated every possession. Utah’s offense not only flowed through her — it sharpened because of her.

This is the version of White that can tilt Big 12 matchups.

2. Utah’s freshmen guards are already changing games

LA Sneed and Avery Hjelmstad didn’t look like freshmen — they looked like difference makers. Sneed controlled pace, scored 17, and ran the offense with poise well beyond her age. Hjelmstad came off the bench flying, hitting shots, defending hard, and posting a ridiculous +29.

Together, they injected energy, tempo, and edge — the kind of lift that turns routine wins into blowouts. If this is their baseline, Utah’s ceiling just went up.

3. Bench depth looks real — and dangerous

Utah’s bench produced 27 points, but the impact was more than scoring.

  • Mafua: 8 points, 3 rebounds, a forceful defensive presence

  • Otto: 9 points, 5 rebounds, +24

  • Hjelmstad: 10 points, 2 steals, +29

  • Ross: 9 points, 6 rebounds, +17

Utah’s rotations didn’t dip — they accelerated.

That’s the sign of a team that’s beginning to find lineup combinations and trust role players to produce consistently.

4. Defensive adjustment after the first quarter was elite

Boise State hit five threes in the first quarter and looked comfortable early. Then Utah flipped the switch:

  • Boise State shot 24% in the second quarter

  • Scored 10 total in the period

  • Turned it over repeatedly under pressure

  • Never regained rhythm

Utah’s ball pressure improved, rotations sharpened, and the Utes walled off the rim. The game ended right there.

5. Sharing the ball turned a hot shooting night into a system win

Utah finished with:

  • 25 assists on 37 made shots

  • Assisted on 68% of all buckets

  • Five players with multiple assists

This wasn’t a hero-ball night. It was a clinic on spacing, drive-and-kick, and unselfish play.

When Utah plays with this level of ball movement, the offense scales exponentially — especially with multiple shooters heating up at once.

Bottom Line

Utah didn’t just beat Boise State — it asserted a version of itself that looks increasingly sustainable: deep, balanced, physical, and capable of blowing a game open in five minutes.

If this offensive rhythm and rebounding intensity travel, the Utes won’t just win games — they’ll start overwhelming teams.
