Utes Get Grind Out Win Over Weber State In Beehive Classic

Dec 14, 2019, 4:43 PM | Updated: 11:49 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah men’s basketball team used the momentum they received at the end of the first half to pull away in the second half and knock off the Weber State Wildcats 60-49 in the Beehive Classic.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Utes went on a run that was sparked by a three pointer from Both Gach and a transition layup from Timmy Allen. Utah had a 31-25 lead at halftime before outscoring the Wildcats 29-24 in the final 20 minutes to get the win.

The Utes had to play the Wildcats without starting point guard Rylan Jones, who missed the game at Vivint Smart Home Arena with an injury that he suffered in their last game against Central Arkansas on December 7.

Utah didn’t shoot the ball well throughout the game, converting on just 34 percent of their field goal attempts and went 5-20 from beyond the arc.

Allen led all scorers with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, shooting 6-15 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line. He was the only Utah player to reach double figures. Riley Battin, Branden Carlson and Mikael Jantunen each scored 9 points apiece.

Weber State didn’t shoot the ball that well either, hitting 33 percent of their field goals and shooting just 4-18 from downtown. Jerrick Harding was held to 17 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, shooting 5-14 from the field. Cody John added 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Kham Davis chipped in 11 points and 6 boards.

The Utes improved their record to 8-2 on the season and will head to Las Vegas to face No. 8 Kentucky at T-Mobile Arena on Wednesday, December 18. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
