SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah head football coach Kyle Whittingham was very pleased with what he has seen from quarterback Charlie Brewer during spring ball.

Through the first three weeks of spring football, Whittingham has always spoken highly of Charlie Brewer and his ability at quarterback. This will make for a very heated battle in fall camp when Cam Rising returns from injury.

Whittingham spoke with the media on Tuesday morning and was asked if there was a quarterback that is separating themselves from the rest in spring football.

“Charlie Brewer hands down,” Whittingham said. “He’s been everything we’d hoped he’d be up to this point. He’s a proven vet, he’s had a lot of experience under his belt at the power five level, he’s thrown for a ton of yards and won a bunch of games. So that’s what we expected. So far, he’s been exactly what we expected. As he continues to digest and assimilate the offense, he gets better and better. “It’s going to be a great battle between him and Cam this fall because they’re two outstanding quarterbacks.”

Last season, Jake Bentley joined the program from South Carolina. He was in a battle with Rising and Drew Lisk in fall camp of 2020 but the job was ultimately won by Rising before suffering a season-ending injury in the season opener against USC.

Whittingham didn’t speak this highly of Bentley when he was with the Utes. Now, Bentley is at South Alabama after transferring from the program. He was benched late in the second quarter of the regular season finale against Washington State. Drew Lisk came in and led the Utes to a massive comeback win over the Cougars.

Utah Tight Ends Love What They See From Charlie Brewer

One of the players on Utah’s roster that surprisingly didn’t find the end zone during the 2020 season was star tight end Brant Kuithe. He had chances of scoring touchdowns but throws in the red zone that went his way were not accurate and Kuithe couldn’t get any TD’s. Having played with Brewer for a couple of weeks now, Kuithe loves Brewer’s game.

“He can throw it all angles,” Kuithe said. “He can run the ball. You saw it at Baylor, a little glimpse. I didn’t get to see much of him at Baylor just because we are on the west coast and I didn’t get to really watch much of him but the things I have seen, he can throw amazing and during practice, he can launch it.”

A player in that position group that has a bright future at Utah is Dalton Kincaid, a transfer from San Diego. He noticed the confidence that Brewer has in spring ball.

“The more reps you get with him, the better chemistry, so any rep is a good rep,” Kincaid mentioned. “He’s very confident in what he does. He kind of just has a switch that when he’s in the huddle, he’s just locked in. He throws a gorgeous ball, it seems to always get you in the right spot. He’s kind of just taking more of a leadership role I feel like when he’s in the huddle.”

Charlie Brewer’s Career At Baylor

Brewer had an amazing career with the Bears. He threw for 9,700 yards, 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions in 44 games played. His best season was as a junior in 2019 when he had 3,161 passing yards for 21 TD’s and 7 INT’s.

He earned All-Big 12 honorable mention and was the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award finalist. Baylor finished the 2019 season with an 11-3 record, falling to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game and lost to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
