UVU Loses At Buzzer In Bizarre Ending, 73-71

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Utah Valley lost on a heartbreaking last second, second chance attempt on a wild finish against CSU Bakersfield. 73-71.

The end of the game was quite bizarre and had several strange moments.

A Peculiar Final Stretch

Trailing 71-68, UVU’s Ben Nakwaasah hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 71-all with 18.1 seconds remaining. The play caused an uproar with the Bakersfield bench as the clock had not started on the play at all. After consulting a replay and timing the play with a stop watch, the officials determined that just over 18 remained in the game, Bakersfield ball.

With an opportunity to win the game, the Roadrunners’ Justin Edler-Davis took a strange shot with about seven seconds remaining that was off and gave the Wolverines the ball back.

UVU called a timeout to set up the winning play, but Nakwaasah committed a strange turnover on the inbounds, throwing the ball off the back of the backboard to return the possession to Bakerfield.

Jarkel Joiner missed a 3-ball with a second left, but Taze Moore grabbed the rebound and banked it in to cap off one of the strangest sequences of basketball of the young season.

UVU trailed 37-32 at halftime but fought back to make things interesting at the end.

By The Numbers

Connor MacDougall led the Wolverines with 14 points off the bench.

Rickey Holden and Moore each had 16 points for Bakersfield.

Next Up

UVU will look for its first WAC conference win of the season against Seattle. The Wolverines will also be putting their 18-game home winning streak on the line in the contest which will be played next Saturday at 7 p.m.
