OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley Wolverines took a big step towards the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament with a big 82-70 win over Grand Canyon.

Eariler in the season, the Antelopes defeated UVU 71-60 in Phoenix to snap a five game winning streak for the Wolverines.

This time, UVU came into the game against Grand Canyon with another five-game winning streak and extending it to six games by defending home court.

UVU will end its home schedule having gone 11-1 at home this season. The lone loss came on January 19 to New Mexico State, which since locked up the regular season conference title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

By beating Grand Canyon on Thursday, the Wolverines are in great shape to secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, as they came into the matchup tied with the Antelopes for second place. A win over CSU-Bakersfield on Saturday would give UVU the second seed in the tournament.

All season long, Utah Valley has depended heavily on its ability to shoot the ball from deep. As the 15th best shooting team in the country in terms of 3-point shooting percentage, the Wolverines continued to stroke the ball well from outside against the Antelopes.

In the first half, the Wolverines shot the ball at a terrific pace, netting 7-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc.

While they slowed down a bit in the second half, the Wolverines finished the game shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc with 12 makes.

By The Numbers

Jake Toolson and his cousin, Conner, were terrific in the important win. Jake finished with a game high 19 points with four made 3-pointers while Conner wasn’t far behind with 18 points and three made triples.

Grand Canyon had four players in double-digit scoring, including three tied for the team lead in scoring with 15 points.

Next Up

Utah Valley will next host CSU-Bakersfield on the program’s senior night on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN+.
