SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Weber State quarterback Bronson Barron threw four touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 49-21 win over Idaho State in the season opener.

Barron threw two touchdowns in the first half and then two more in the second half for Weber State in their win over Idaho State. The former American Fork star connected with Rashid Shaheed twice, along with Josh Davis and David Ames once each.

The defense was stout for the Wildcats, holding Idaho State to just 7 points before putting the backups into the game.

Weber State Shakes Off Rust To Score Two Touchdowns In First Half

The first sack of the season didn’t take too long for Weber State as George Tarlas got to the quarterback on the first drive. Both teams started the game with three-and-outs. Weber State had a chance to take a 7-point lead after linebacker Conner Mortensen intercepted the Idaho State QB. The Wildcats got into the red zone after Bronson Barron found Ty MacPherson for a big gain.

On fourth and goal, Weber State missed their short field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless. That was the score after the first quarter. After the Wildcats picked up their second interception of the game, Barron threw his first career touchdown pass, finding Josh Davis for a 22-yard TD. Weber State took a 7-0 lead with under 9 minutes left until halftime.

After getting the ball back again, Barron threw a deep ball to David Ames for a 55-yard touchdown on a reverse flea flicker. Weber’s lead was 14-0 with 7:12 remaining in the first half.

Weber State Pulls Away From Idaho State With Dominant Second Half

Idaho State came out of the locker room motivated and it showed on the field with a 76-yard touchdown quickly on their first drive of the second half. The Wildcats still had a 14-7 with under 14 minutes left in the third quarter.

Weber State answered quickly with a 38-yard touchdown from Barron to Rashid Shaheed to take a 21-7 lead with 11:40 left in the third quarter. Idaho State fumbled the ball on the next possession and the Wildcats recovered it. Barron threw a deep ball to MacPherson to set them up in the red zone. Barron found Shaheed for another touchdown, this time from nine yards out. It’s the second TD connection of the half for Barron and Shaheed. Weber had a 28-7 lead with 8:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Weber State stopped Idaho State again and turned it into a 74-yard touchdown run by Josh Davis. That put the Wildcats up 35-7 with 5:42 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats added another touchdown before the end of the third as Dontae McMillan found the end zone for the first time in the game. Weber had a 42-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats bobbled the catch and Idaho State recovered. Shortly after, the Bengals scored their second touchdown of the night. The Weber State lead was 42-14 with 14 minutes left in the game.

With under 10 minutes left in the game, Idaho State found the end zone again but Weber State still had a three-touchdown lead, 42-21. Later on in the fourth quarter, McMillan found the end zone for the second time as the Wildcats took a 49-21 lead.

Weber State is now 1-0 on the season. They will have next week off since their game with Cal Poly was moved to April 17. The Wildcats will next be in action on Saturday, March 13 at home against UC Davis. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. MST and can be seen on KJZZ, Pluto TV channel 1054, as well as heard on 103.1 FM “The Wave.”
