CHENEY, Wash. – For the first time this season, Weber State basketball picked up back-to-back victories over conference opponents with a win over the Eastern Washington Eagles on Thursday.

It took a buzzer-beating tip-in from Alex Tew with less than a second on the clock. But, the outcome was the same regardless.

Weber State Basketball Secures Dramatic Victory Over Eastern Washington

Weber State was in the driver’s seat for the overwhelming majority of the game at Reese Court.

The Wildcats held a lead, not just for the entire first half, but for more than the first 30 minutes of action. It wasn’t until a late 12-4 Eagles run that Eastern Washington took their first lead of the game with 6:52 left in regulation.

The difference up until that point was work on the interior.

Weber State finished the game with a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint. Mostly thanks to Tew who tied his career high with 16 points. The senior center filled up the stat sheet with four rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block.

Blaise Threatt, Trevor Hennig, and Nemanja Sarenac were the other Wildcats to reach double figures.

As previously mentioned, a Weber State win looked all but certain through the first 30 minutes of action.

Once the Eagles clawed their way to a lead, it was anyone’s best guess who would come out on top. Looking only at the post-game stats, you wouldn’t have guessed that the Cats were in control for most of the 40 minutes. Eastern Washington shot better from three, had more rebounds, more blocks, and fewer fouls.

However, in close games, it comes down to late-game execution. And Weber State regained control in the clutch.

After an Eagles trip to the line tied the game at 64 with 15 seconds left, the game’s outcome was left on the shoulders of the road team.

Threatt’s last-second layup attempt was swatted out of bounds which left just four ticks on the clock. Threatt took the inbounds pass and put the ball where only his center could reach it.

Tew did the rest.

The win marks the third time this season Weber State has strung together consecutive wins and the first time where both have been against conference opponents.

A shot at the Big Sky title is already lost for the Wildcats. But, with two games left, they will have the lasting memory of a suspenseful road win.

Weber State basketball will take on the Idaho Vandals at ICCU Arena on Saturday, March 1, before ending their season at home against the Northern Colorado Bears on Monday, March 3.
