The Weber State Wildcats Suffer A Heartbreaking Loss To Lamar

BEAUMONT, TEXAS- The #20 Weber State Wildcats drop a heartbreaker to the Lamar Cardinals, missing a last second field goal, losing by a final score of 17-16.

The Wildcats traveled to Beaumont on Saturday to take on the members of the Southland Conference in the first contest between the two programs.

Weber State Versus Lamar Recap

First Half

A back and forth battle between the Wildcats and the Cardinals had the teams deadlocked 10-10 at the break. Lamar opened the game with a monster 14-play play drive, covering 69 yards, chewing up seven minutes and ten seconds. The drive sputtered out on the 23 yard line, resulting in a field goal, giving Lamar the 3-0 lead.

The next two drives for each team ended in punts, followed by a Weber State fumble. The turnover set up Lamar to go on another 11-play scoring drive, resulting in a touchdown.

The Wildcats received the ball with just over a minute to go before half time, trailing by ten. Weber State answered with a field goal drive of their own, handing the ball off to Damon Bankston five time, setting up Kyle Thompson from 42 yards out.

On the next Lamar drive, Weber State’s Montae Pate returned an interception 31 yards to the house, tying the game at ten points a piece and giving the Wildcats the momentum.

Second Half

The Weber State Wildcats came out of the half time gates on fire, marching down the field. Their opening drive was 9 plays, including a 31-yard completion between Richie Munoz and Jacob Sharp, which set up Weber State on the 2-yard line. On the very next play, Richie Munoz found Colter May for the score. Kyle Thompson would miss what ended up being a crucial extra point.

Lamar took Weber State blow for blow, answering with a touchdown on their very next drive with a 72-yard touchdown pass. The Cardinals would convert the PAT and take a one point lead that they would not relinquish.

On Weber State’s next possession, with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter, kicker Kyle Thompson would miss a 44-yard field goal.

In the time between the missed field goal and the last two possessions of the game, Weber State and Lamar traded punts and turnovers on downs.

The Wildcats retained possession with 10:50 remaining in the fourth quarter and would chew most of the time off of the clock with a 96-yard drive that took nearly nine minutes. Weber State found themself in a goal-to-go situation from the 3-yard line, but was unable to punch it in on four attempts, turning the ball over on downs with 1:55 remaining in the game.

The Wildcats would force a Lamar punt, getting the ball back with 0:44 on the clock. Richie Munoz carried his Wildcats into field goal territory, where Kyle Thompson would miss the game winning field goal at the buzzer.

Final score, Weber State 16 – Lamar 17.
