Report: USA Gymnastics Alternate, Red Rock Kara Eaker Tests Positive For COVID-19

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – According to multiple reports and confirmed by AP, USA Gymnastics alternate and Red Rocks gymnast Kara Eaker has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Washington Post along with other media outlets are reporting Kara Eaker testing positive for COVID-19, days before the Tokyo Olympic Games are set to begin.
Al Fong, the personal coach for Eaker, confirmed the positive test in an email to The Associated Press on Monday. Fong also told AP that fellow Olympic alternate Leanne Wong also tested positive for COVID-19.
Both Eaker and Wong have been placed in isolation.
Charlie Keegan of KSHB 41 News in Kansas City was told by Eaker’s father, who said that Kara is doing fine and has no symptoms. Eaker told reporters during a Zoom press conference after the Olympic Trials that she received the COVID-19 vaccine.

No official announcement has been released by the Olympic organizers or Team USA Gymnastics. Their first meet is on Sunday, July 25 at 12:10 a.m. MDT. Then they will compete in the team final on Tuesday, July 27 at 4:45 a.m. MDT.
Eaker is one of three Red Rocks that made the USA squad. She joined MyKayla Skinner and Grace McCullum as members of Utah Gymnastics on the USA team.
