SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Are you sad about the 2020 Summer Olympics being canceled? So are we. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of our favorite Olympics movies to keep us entertained until the Games are played in 2021.

On Tuesday, March 24, the International Olympic Committee officially postponed the 2020 Olympics that were scheduled to take place in Japan during the summer. The Games were moved a year into the future due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While we won’t be able to enjoy the live competition between nations this summer, we can enjoy the spirit of the Games through past Olympic moments including those found in movies.

Here are some of our favorite Olympics movies:

Cool Runnings (1993)

The movie “Cool Runnings” is based on a true story about the Jamaican bobsled team that participated in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. The warm climate of Jamaica doesn’t lend itself to normal winter conditions ideal for bobsled training but “Cool Runnings” showed that a group of determined athletes was able to fight against advesity to perform on the world’s biggest stage. The film had a $17 million budget and pulled in $154.9 million at the box office.

Cutting Edge (1992)

The movie “Cutting Edge” is our romantic-comedy Olympics movie recommendation. The plot features a hockey player suffered a head injury that ended his chance to play in the NHL or compete in the sports in future Games and an aspiring skater who is difficult to work. The athletes pair together in figure skating for a chance at Olympic glory. The film reeled in over $25 million at the box office.

Miracle (2004)

One of the most famous, if not the most famous events in United States Olympic Games history is when Team USA hockey defeated the Soviet team in the 1980 Games. The Soviets were heavily favored in the 1980 Winter Olympics which took place in Lake Placid, New York. “Miracle” is based on the true events of that team’s journey to the gold medal. The movie had a budget of $28 million and took home $64.5 million from the box office.

Honorable Mention: Chariots of Fire (1981)

“Chariots of Fire” is based on the Scottish runner in the 1924 Summer Olympics which took place in Paris. The film had a $5.5 million budget and pulled in $59 million at the box office.

The 2020 Summer Games were originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9.

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

The CDC does not recommend wearing a face mask respirator to protect yourself from coronavirus unless a healthcare professional recommends it.

How To Get Help

If you’re worried you may have COVID-19, you can contact the Utah Coronavirus Information Line at 1-800-456-7707 to speak to trained healthcare professionals. You can also use telehealth services through your healthcare providers.

Additional Resources

If you see evidence of PRICE GOUGING, the Utah Attorney General’s Office wants you to report it. Common items in question include toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, certain household cleaners, and even cold medicine and baby formula. Authorities are asking anyone who sees price gouging to report it to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection at 801-530-6601 or 800-721-7233. The division can also be reached by email at consumerprotection@utah.gov.
