Inside The Numbers Of BYU Football’s Win Over UTSA

PROVO, Utah – It wasn’t as easy as expected, but BYU football came away victorious with a 27-20 win over the UTSA Roadrunners. The Cougars are now 4-0 for the first time since 2014.

Here’s a look inside the numbers from BYU’s fourth win of this unprecedented 2020 season.

The number of total yards BYU’s offense produced in Saturday’s win over UTSA. BYU has had at least 450 yards of offense in five consecutive games dating back to 2019.

BYU’s offense had 15 big plays against the Roadrunners. Any play that goes for more than 15 yards is considered a big play. BYU had eight big plays through the passing game and seven on the ground rushing. The biggest play was a third-quarter grab from Wilson to Gunner Romney for 52 yards.

Coming into Saturday’s game, BYU had 12 sacks on the season. This weekend, the Cougars put together only one sack and it was a big one late in the fourth quarter courtesy of Gabe Summers who converged on UTSA QB Lowell Narcisse.

Running back Tyler Allgeier earned his first career start on Saturday and he rewarded the staff with their decision by averaging 6.1 yards per rushing attempt. Allgeier ended the day with 116 yards and one touchdown, the final score for BYU in their seven-point victory.

Zach Wilson’s quarterback rating took a slight dip against UTSA from the lofty 200+ QBRs he had produced the first three weeks. Wilson was under more pressure than in weeks past with BYU having reserves along the offensive line. But the junior signal-caller still put together a QBR of 177.1 passing for 292 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions.

UTSA QB Lowell Narcisse stepped in for starter Frank Harris at the end of the second quarter and injected life into the Roadrunner passing attack. Narcisse had a QBR of 214.2 and passed for 229 yards off the bench.

All 27 of BYU’s points were from the red zone compared to UTSA who only scored three of their 20 points inside the 20.

Eight different BYU players recorded a stat in the tackles for loss column on Saturday. Those players included Kavika Fonua (2), Micah Harper (1), Payton Wilgar (1), Bracken El-Bakri (1), Shamon Willis (1), Gabe Summers (1), Uriah Leiataua (0.5), Isaiah Kaufusi (0.5).

BYU’s average gain on first down plays was 7.7. The Cougars ran 30 plays for a total of 232 yards. Putting yourself in 2nd & shorts is good for offensive execution. Highlights the mistakes with penalties and other miscues that BYU made in this game to keep it closer than expected.
