PROVO, Utah – When you size up the roster of the 2019 BYU football team, there aren’t many positions that you look at and say, that’s a glaring weakness.  But there are position groups that need to take big steps forward this fall.

One of those position groups is the wide receiver position.

Two wide receivers turning heads in camp

Had the chance to speak with BYU wide receivers coach Fesi Sitake on Friday.  Coach Sitake said that senior wide receiver Micah Simon has been excellent through the first three days of camp.  In day one, Simon had a touchdown catch down the sideline during the media observation portion of practice with Zach Wilson throwing him the football.

Mitch Harper and Matt Baiamonte share their thoughts on Day 3 of BYU Fall Camp.

Back in spring, Simon had arguably the best catch of spring ball that was a one-handed grab.  There’s no question Simon has athleticism.  But will it translate to game days in the regular season?  That’s the big question for Simon.  But it’s a positive development for BYU that Simon is stepping up as they look to round out their second-string receivers now that Neil Pau’u is out for the entire 2019 season.

The other wide receiver Fesi Sitake highlighted was true freshman Keanu Hill.  Hill who prepped at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, was the MVP according to Sitake of the wide receivers in day one.  Hill is a big-bodied receiver in the mold of Pau’u, as he stands at 6-4 and weighs 210 pounds.

Wait till he goes full speed…

Another freshman receiver in the program is Luc Andrada out of Pueblo, Colorado.  Andrada, a former quarterback in the high school ranks and a record-setter in track and field during his prep career has coaches excited about his potential in the program when he’s able to display his speed in games.

Return game

During the media observation portion of practice on Friday, we saw positional group work, including the special teams unit.  Some of the individuals lining up to field punts included Gunner Romney, Dayan Ghanwoloku, Luc Andrada, and Jackson McChesney.

Scorching hot

Day 3 of practice was outside once again on the Student-Athlete Building practice fields and the high temperature was 95 degrees at 6 o’clock.  Temperatures were rising on the field over 100 degrees as practice winded down late in the afternoon on Friday night.
