SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A fan caused a massive crash during the opening stage of the 2021 Tour de France long distance cycling race.

Stage 1 of the race took place on Saturday, June 26 in Brest, France. It’s the 108th edition of the Tour de France.
During the beginning day of the race, a fan stood alongside the route and held a sign.
The sign struck Tony Martin, who was riding past. Martin tumbled to the ground, which caused a huge pile up of bikes and fellow riders.
Jasha Sütterlin of Germany was injured and had to withdraw from the competition, according to The Tour.

After the incident, the Tour de France asked fans to “respect the safety of the riders” and to not “risk everything for a photo or to get on television!”
France’s Julian Alaphilippe went on to win the opening stage of the race. In honor of the Stage 1 victory, Alaphilippe will wear a yellow jersey during Stage 2.

The race will take place over a variety or routes throughout France until the final stage on Sunday, July 18.
