SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah football has had some great players in it’s long history but two teams in particular put the Utes on the map in college football.

The 2004 team that was the first team that wasn’t in a BCS conference to win a BCS bowl game when they went undefeated and beat Pittsburgh in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. The other team was the second “BCS-Buster” when the 2008 Utah football team went undefeated and knocked off Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

Those two teams had representatives on a KSL Sports Facebook and YouTube live called “The Great Ute Debate: ’04 vs. ’08.”

The Great Ute Debate

Utah Football 2004 v. 2008 Eric Weddle, Stevenson Sylvester, Quinton Ganther and Brian Johnson are here to debate the greatest Utah Football team of all time.

Former Utah running back Quinton Ganther and defensive back Eric Weddle represented the 2004 team while former linebacker Stevenson Sylvester and quarterback Brian Johnson represented the 2008 team.

“The thing that sticks out to me of how these guys are treated,” Ganther said. “These guys feel entitled to everything. That building that they walk in everyday, we built that building.”

Ganther went on to mention how back when he and Weddle played at Utah that Weddle would skip meals just to have some extra money in his check to take care of him and his wife.

Those two teams certainly put Utah football on the map and helped change the landscape of getting a playoff system in place. As far as changing the program, those two teams helped get the Utes into the Pac-12.
