Hollywood, Calif. – Washington State head coach Mike Leach is arguably the most interesting coach in all of sports due to his pirate persona, love of aliens and he is an author, but with four books under his belt, Leach claimed he has never sent an email.

The Cougar coach often provides entertaining monologues about odd subjects – like when he analyzed the Pac-12 mascots and broke down a battle between them.

He is often referred to as a national treasure on Twitter.

During Pac-12 media days, he sat down with Alex Kirry and Scott Mitchell of KSL’s UnRivaled to discuss the upcoming season, his time at BYU and how he recruits and communicates with modern athletes.

The conversation turned to the distractions athletes face today with cell phones. In part of that conversation, Leach admitted to never sending an email. He clarified that he does text.

“It reminds me of stuff that my dad would say when I was a kid. There are always distractions but they only manifest themselves differently. The eagerness to play and willingness to make sacrifices necessary has not changed at all,” Leach said in reference to today’s recruiting challenges. “I do think cell phones provide a distraction that isn’t necessarily healthy. I guarantee that I use mine to the point that there is a health risk.”

While he did admit that cell phones are a distraction, the 58-year-old admitted that he uses his as much as any younger person. It seems that sometimes his cell phone is used to tweet memes to his 228k followers.

“I have never sent an email, I have dictated some and my name has been attached to some, but I have never sent an email nor do I know how to. Between texts and calls, you have no choice [to use a cell phone.]”

Leach noted there have always been distractions to players – way before smartphones.

“I think that technology has a plus and a minus. I remember as a kid if you got your name in the newspaper, instead of it constantly changing on Twitter a couple of times of day,” Leach said. “Instead you’d flash that article around for a month and it still would be a distraction.”

Chalk that email comment up to Mike Leach being Mike Leach.

Utah hosts Washington State Saturday night at 8:00 p.m (MT).
