WILLOW CREEK, Utah – Weber State’s head coach Jay Hill is best known for his strategic football mind although after this weeks episode of The Hallowed Grounds, Hill may be best known for his extraordinary skill on the golf course.

Tom Hackett took Hill on at Willow Creek Country Club in his weekly television show, The Hallowed Grounds, that airs on KSL SportsBeat.

The show is a two hole challenge. The winner of the first hole will receive $100 gift card to Uinta Golf. Then they have the option of playing double or nothing for a Bushnell Range Finder valued at $500 for whoever gets closer to the pin.

Hill found the bunker up the right hand side of the par four 14th, while Hackett found the fairway. Hackett then struck a six iron just below the green while Hill struck a five iron over the sand behind the green. Hill chipped and rolled the ball past the hole, leaving himself with a 10 foot par putt while Hackett duffed his chip, putted to 5 feet and then missed his bogey putt and eventually doubled while Hill left with a bogey. Hill decided to play double or nothing and after hitting his 8 iron to within 15 feet on the par three 15th, Hackett missed the green to the right and found the trees.

Hill won the Bushnell range finder and was very happy about it.

During the episode, Hackett and Hill discussed how former Ute and current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Matt Gay was only a few days from signing with Weber State. Utah pinched him from the hands of Weber State, much to the dislike of Hill.

Hill was also the coach who recruited Hackett from Melbourne, Australia. He told the story of how he had to convince Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, that a trip to Australia would be worth it, “I had to talk him into it, this is just one you have to trust me on. I believe we can go to Australia, start rugby punting and be way more than anybody in the country at doing this,” Hill said to Whittingham back in 2011.

Hill also told Hackett that Weber State is going to be “good” again this year. They play San Diego State and Nevada as their Division I opponents and Hill believes they have a good chance of knocking both teams off.
