PROVO — The BYU football depth chart is out for the eighth game of the season, an upcoming Halloween afternoon home game against Arizona State.
BYU enters the game at 6-1 and is ranked No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25, after falling to UCF last week in double overtime.
Here are some quick notes before diving into the eighth depth chart of the year for the eighth-ranked Cougars.

Sione Moa returns to depth chart, co-starter at running back
BYU running back Sione Moa racked up 13 carries in the loss at UCF. It was the most carries Moa has had in a game since 2024 against Kansas State.
What was also noteworthy from Moa’s performance was that it was his first game action since Week 1, when he suffered an MCL injury.
Now Moa returns, and he’s a co-starter within the running back depth chart alongside Preston Rex, who had a 66-yard rushing performance against Notre Dame two weeks ago.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said that LJ Martin is “getting closer” in his return from injury. Last week in Orlando, Martin made the trip and was walking around with a boot on his foot. Over the previous two weeks, he rolled around on a scooter.
Keayen Nead removed at tight end
Reserve tight end Keayen Nead is not on the depth chart at tight end for the first time this season. Undisclosed as to the reason. He has been the third tight end throughout the year. Behind Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga is now Noah Moeaki.
Shakeups at the guard spots
Trevin Ostler, who started at right guard in place of an injured Kyle Sfarcioc, suffered an injury of his own in the loss at UCF.
Ostler had to be helped off the field by trainers and, at the conclusion of the game, went into the locker room on crutches.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said after the UCF loss that they expect Kyle Sfarcioc, the starter at right guard throughout the season until last week, to return. Sfarcioc was suited up in Orlando and on the sideline, but didn’t play. He suffered an injury in the win over Notre Dame.
Sfarcioc is listed as a co-starter on the depth chart this week with Stanford transfer Zak Yamauchi. After Ostler went down late in the fourth quarter, Yamauchi stepped in for Ostler last week.
Before Ostler’s injury, he was also listed as a backup at left guard, behind Sonny Makasini. Now the backup at left guard is Joe Brown.
Raider Damuni atop the strong safety position
Since Raider Damuni returned from the injury he suffered in Week 1, he’s returned as the starter at strong safety. Naturally, he’s back atop that position group on the depth chart.
BYU still has him listed as a co-starter with Tommy Prassas.
Pro Football Focus had Damuni recorded for 62 snaps in the loss at UCF, while Prassas played 21.
Evan Johnson removed from the depth chart; reshuffling at cornerback
At the end of the game, BYU starting cornerback Evan Johnson appeared to have rolled his ankle, and two trainers carried him off the field after the game ended.

Kalani Sitake said on Monday that they expect Johnson to be OUT for this week’s game against Arizona State. That was reflected on the depth chart with him being removed.
Mississippi State transfer Jayven Williams is replacing Johnson and moving into the starting lineup, with Matthias Leach backing him up and Kevin Doe as the third-string cornerback.
